Thread: platform differences

Started by: stoic_rosestoic_rose

25 Jun 2019, 20:47

I haven't exactly been keeping up with this game lately, just verifying runs every once in a while, so excuse me if this is a tad late.

Banning emulator and clearing out "the mess of platforms" and making SNES the only allowed platform for this board is asinine. This is not SM64. There are an entire 7 people who have done a run. Version differences are not a big deal. Emulator is not going to be different enough to warrant a blanket ban.

If you want to compare only SNES runs, there's already an option for that - there are filters in the top right of the leaderboard page that you can use to compare only the times of a certain platform. This is much preferable to just banning platforms that YOU, personally, do not care about, and stopping players on those platforms from being able to run the game.

If you're legitimately concerned about emu runs being inaccurate to original hardware, you can do what many other games do and ban them for WR, but allow them otherwise (e.g. currently emu runs longer than 12:55 for Continual and 11:19 for Level would be allowed).

Irie, I fear you're falling into the trap of thinking "I am the moderator, I make the rules," rather than allowing the community as a whole to decide how the game should be run.

As it stands now there are mislabeled runs on the board, and the game is closed off to would-be runners that might not have a SNES. Suffice it to say it's a mess.

Thread: how easy/hard are 1P2C strats?

Started by: NTRGNTRG

1P2C in general is not difficult, at least in my opinion. Very rarely are you truly controlling both players at the same time (usually it's just switching between them very quickly), and when you are it's usually very simple movement, such as walking in a straight line.

One of the more involved 1P2C strats I can think of is using both players to force the pillars in Vader room 2, which only saves a couple of seconds. As Blue said though, not all 1P2C is created equal. 1P2C saves over a minute in Chancellor (Both 2 Player Warps plus the Drop-In Warp in the elevator shaft, all of which are pretty easy).

Over the course of the entire run I'd estimate 1P2C to save somewhere between two to three minutes. It's definitely worth trying out, the strats are all very easy to do after a bit of practice.

You've been posting on threads that are YEARS old, it's very obvious that those are not actively being discussed anymore. Just think about it for half a second before you post lmao

Why do you keep necroing threads from months ago? No offense, but your replies add nothing to the discussion in this thread and it just clogs up all of our notifications.

(Late to the party, I know.)

I don't see anything wrong with using this glitch. At least in my opinion, it's the same as SMB players waiting a certain amount of time before they start the game to get better enemy patterns.

Even if Nintendo DID go after streamers emulating games (which is hyper unlikely), wearing a cartridge around your neck wouldn't save you from legal action. It doesn't matter if you own the game, if you download the ROM from the internet it's piracy. The ONLY legal way to emulate (and it's more of a gray area than explicitly legal) is to dump the ROM from your own cartridge yourself, and play that ROM. Not that they'd know the difference necessarily, but semantics.

Do you think you could add the "Plug and Play" platform as well? I own a Namco Ms. Pacman Plug and Play that I'd be interested in using to run this game.

If you have 5k subscribers on YouTube, use YouTube to advertise your twitch channel (plug it at the end of your videos). Seems pretty obvious to me tbh.

To be fair, the allowed emulators are described in the rules for each category, so there's no reason those threads should ever be made in the first place. It's not like it's unclear; "The only allowed emulator is the latest release of GambatteSpeedrun (Currently r614) with a GBC bios image. All other emulators are banned."

Might be that your keyboard is made in such a way that the A and Enter keys cannot be registered at the same time by whatever processes your inputs. This is known as "jamming," you can read more about it on the Wikipedia page for Rollover at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rollover_(key)

Most Pokemon runs require that the emulator window be fully visible for the entirety of the run. I'd assume that'd be the easiest way to ensure the correct emulator is used.

Yeah, Switch save files are stored on the system, so it should work for both.

I use a $12 composite/S-video capture card off of amazon, which shows up as a capture device in OBS. Works fine for my purposes.

@iriebutler I'd like to apologize for my absence from the site. I've verified your runs for you.

I've just removed my Twitter from my SRC page. It's a terrible way to reach me and should never have been put on this site.

I'd like to point out that a YouTube comment or a Reddit PM are much better ways of reaching me, since they send me an email and a push notification to my phone. A forum post in the game forum would have been a good idea too.

I'm sorry that Discord didn't let you send me messages without being my friend, but I've accepted your request in case you need to get ahold of me in the future. I've also joined the SRC Discord so that this doesn't happen to anyone in the future who needs to contact me.

Sorry again for any inconvenience experienced.

Assuming you're using something like LiveSplit, you set up a hotkey to split in the settings.

I personally have it set up so that a footpedal splits, so I don't have to take my hands off the keyboard/mouse.
