[2020-12-01] (Feedback sought; thanks!) Changing/updating the 100% rules for SotM content

United States

Hey there folx!

I'm almost done with my proof-of-concept edits in the Category Extensions page (which is solely for Seeded runs where you practice and optimize a given seed) and will soon be working on the migration process for the main page here.

One of the things that absolutely needs reworked are the rules for the 100% category. There's a thread here where I posted what I'd like to see changed (before I was brought on as a SuperMod), but I'm going to compile a first draft in this new thread in an attempt to keep the conversation cleaner and more specific.

For the purpose of clarity, I'm using the following conventions to denote what I think should be added and/or removed:

  • Bolded words are entirely new additions
  • Italicized words are modifications
  • words are removals (whether straight-up or as part of a modification)
  • //## Double backslash followed immediately by a number will indicate a footnote comment regarding the change to keep the rules themselves from being cluttered with comments/reasoning.

Without further preamble, the next post will contain the latest changes to the 100% rules. The post after that will be updated with a changelog as discussions go on.

//01: Relocated for clarity from "general rules"

//02: Removal of map discovery requirements. I'm personally not a fan of this requirement for a few reasons:
* There isn't any sort of achievement or percentage tracker for seeing or coloring in the full map.
* Especially now where there's also a Future Hyrule to explore where it's possible if not likely that there will be nothing there, it's just tedious for the runner as well as verifiers to ensure full map color, all Sheikah Stones are blue, and all Caves have easy-to-miss checkmarks on them.
* There's also a bug in 1.4.0 where Zelda's Balcony (and its Sheikah Stone) get deleted if you unlock Skull Kid, Save & Quit, and then reload that save.

//03: Related to #02, checking the map to gotcha deny a run for missing even one Deku Nut as long as the Stamina Bar & Yves are unlocked feels tedious. Broke it out to just the Stamina upgrade since character unlocks are a separate bullet in the requirements.

//04: Breaking this out from Blue Chests since Heart Container count is already a requirement and the 1-range weapons should be explicitly stated rather than implied. Also, makes it more of an inventory check than a map check.

//05: For clarity on why a given requirement *is* included, the relevant Achievement is included on these.

//06: Clarified upgrades as required, but more importantly, updated to account for 5 Bottles now instead of 3 in Symphony of the Mask.

//07: Clarified that permanent, non-Legendary/-Unique weapons may be infused. We've been counting it anyway, but best to make sure it's clear.

//08: Updates for Symphony of the Mask content.

//09: The "All Purple Chests" requirement was removed when 1.4.0 came out because purple chests are able to respawn on death & boss defeat. However, part of the understanding of that requirement was this "All Map Charms" in addition to the A/X/B/Y items.

//10: Since now, there are more than just "Story" bosses, it needed clarified that all 6 instruments need to be defeated, as well as the option to choose to fight Skull Ganon instead of regular Ganon.

//11: Just an added precaution for easier verification purposes. If the slot checked is the same and the times and stepcounts match, this shouldn't be an issue.

//12: Removed the verification requirement for Bottles since they have dots underneath to show how many you have.

  • Reduced Bottle count to 4 from 5. Just did a routing/strategizing/theorycrafting run that replaced the bottle from ToBS with diamonds.
  • Removed the verification requirement for Bottles since they have dots underneath to show how many you have.
  • Initial posting.

One thing I will note based off of the "new categories" thread: any changes that are only relevant if you have the Symphony of the Mask DLC will probably need to be tied to a separate variable with labels "Base 1.4.0" and "1.4.0 w/ DLC" or something along those lines.

Unfortunately, I'll need to rely on runners without the Symphony of the Mask DLC to provide me some info on whether you have access to some of the permanent items that were added, such as the Megaton Hammer & Magic Cape and having Bottles stack in what was the rightmost Bottle slot because of these two additions.

Canada

All in all, these changes look reasonable to me. One thing I might change though is the verification of the bottles - the number of dots under the bottle icon in the menu shows how many bottles the player has acquired, and so opening that submenu isn't necessary (also, it's near impossible to tell the number of bottles from the submenu alone unless each bottle contains a different item).

Is there still the problem with heart pieces not spawning? If it is, maybe consider removing the Heal and Hearty requirement.

Getting a Golden fish (for the mask) feels kinda bleh to me. Because of fishing rng. But I get why it’s there. It’s fine.

Why not use achievements as the goals and for verification?

I think that it's not an issue anymore since some can spawn on the Future Hyrule side, but I haven't tested 100% since 1.4.0 and probably should do a few runs. It's possible the code was already there to lock one of them behind Deku Spitting minigame, thus constantly preventing 100% prior to 1.4.0, but doing some runs myself will probably help.

Yeah, having to get a Golden Fish for Mask of Truth is a bit rough, but since it's an actual item to be collected now, even though the RNG can feel bad, I feel it's gotta be there.

Why not use achievements as the goals and for verification?

I don't want to force people to constantly make new profiles (thus either not submitting to in-game leaderboards or submitting under a new name) or delete data on existing ones, is the main thing.

Like, there's viability for an "all achievements" category, maybe, but that'd be a multi-run thing and rather long in some cases, so I don't foresee too many people (not even myself) wanting to do it.

So, on thinking on this for a bit, just to prevent the subcategorizing from getting a bit too egregious, I'm thinking I'll just separate 100% with Symphony of the Mask content to a separate category "100% w/ DLC" and rename the current 100% to "100% No DLC" so that people who can't or choose not to buy the DLC can still submit.

Also, 100% with SotM DLC seems like it'll be enough of a departure in routing from No DLC to be worth categorizing rather than just subcategorizing (and also sets up No DLC to be put under Misc. since most speedrunners will get the DLC just due to the amount of additional categories that opens up in general).

I'll still make the rules changes & clarifications on both versions, but I'm realizing that the two should probably just have completely separate boards.

Verification Freeze lifted!

The verification freeze for Cadence of Hyrule is over! SRC have added the ability to enable/disable Run Comments on a game-level scale (rather than user-level), which I'll be setting to "Disabled" since I don't think they have notifications or enough moderation tools in order for us moderators to be
