Forum: Super Mario Bros. 3 Category Extensions

Thread: Adding new Categories

Threw down a 23:08 in Frog% No Wrong Warp. I lost a one hand run afterwards due to the 8-1 clip taking over a minute and a half. Doh.

Thread: Why no All Stars category?

It's not the same. All stars loses massive amounts of time with the fade ins by itself. You can't buffer across bros on map transitions. 4-4 is different design wise. All-stars should honestly be a sub category imo.

Thread: Request Sub Category for Frog% - All-Stars

Started by: beardylocksbeardylocks

21 Oct 2022, 23:23

Here's my official petition to have an All-Stars sub category extension added for Frog% runs. The differences between the two versions of the game warrant the sub category request. I've found that several strats have to be altered from regular frog% runs due to the changes in how collisions work (hello no 30 frame pauses). Additionally, the level design change to 4-4 completely changes how the level is played. There's some other differences as well; one major change is that buffering inputs over the bros on map transitions does not work. Anyways....

I envision the category rules being as follows:

1) The player must run into the first goomba in 1-1 in order to become frog Mario.

2) Timing starts as soon as Frog Mario appears on the world map; time ends upon wand grab in 1-5.

Accidentally equipping items that change Mario's power up state (except for the star) voids the run. Run is also voided if the player fails to run into the goomba in 1-1 in order to change into frog mario. It is fine to equip the star. You can still use the music box and hammer on the world maps.

The game genie codes below make this run possible:

Change To Frog Mario Whenever You Go To The Map
CB69-AC07
D069-AC67

Collisions Turn You Into Frog Mario
D9A8-6CAA

To date DisasterKatti and myself have both ran Frog% on All-Stars. Our runs are listed below for reference:

Katti's run:
My run:

And yes...I've finally accepted that Frog% is a meme. I don't care lol.

I was stoked when Nifitski and Miniland set new records. At the end of the day the theoretical limits are just that, theoretical. I definitely see a 4:54 happening especially if the fast start to levels is also incorporated into runs. Kick ass jobs by all of you runners!

Thread: which are the considered best levels to skip using the cloud and best levels to use p wings?

Another possible use for a p-wing is 3-5 if you chose to play it versus playing 3-7 in the event that you get a run away hammer bro. Most runners will typically cloud over to 3-7 and play it and 3-F2; however, 3-5 is a very short level with a p-wing.

Whistleless as a category extension would be what I'd recommend. Good call LeKukie. That way it's still similar to warpless but allows for the wrong warp in 7-1 and breaks it out from the traditional "warpless" route.

On the last tank level in world 8 you span fireballs to kill the enemies on the screen as soon as they appear.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to assume that video and in game audio are needed for any and speedruns you submit.

Thread: 3dsen speedrun attempts

Started by: beardylocksbeardylocks

Alright, who's attempted to run SMB1 in 3dsen yet? It's kind of trippy to speedrun in that emulator as things like pipes and cannons rotate as you run past them. The mechanics are essentially the same but the visuals definitely make some things a bit more difficult imo.

Thread: What are some advices for new peoples (like me) who wants to get into SMB speedrun and achieve a time on the leaderboard?

Started by: [Deleted user]

Darpey gave some great advice, submit a run even if it's slow; you've got to start somewhere. The tutorial videos by Kosmic and Darbian are nice as they cover multiple methods to attack sections. Check out the guides on here, especially the animated gifs guide (props to Darpey again). Lastly, don't be discouraged by dying in this game. Matter of fact, be prepared to die a lot lol.

Have fun with all of this especially with learning the tricks. Some of the tricks in this game require a lot of patience and hard work but they payoff is pretty substantial as far as time saves go not to mention they just look cool.

I don't count the pipes in 8-4 as time savers (with the exception of the wrong warp pipe) because they are required in order to traverse the level normally.

The only pipe worth taking to move through a level faster in the any% category is the pipe in 1-1. I forget how much time is lost due to pipe transitions but it's pretty considerable; I want to say it is something like 6 seconds lost per transition.

Thread: 8-4 Intermediate wall jump ?

Started by: lokiwiderlokiwider

10 May 2020, 21:59 (edited: 11 May 2020, 05:45)

So I was testing streaming to Twitch from OBS this evening and was playing SMB1 mostly casually. My last run I managed to squeak out a 5:04.64 time. @lokiwiderlokiwider I used the wall jump method you posted in 8-4. IMO it definitely makes hitting the wall jump pixel easier as long as you get two koopas to spawn. Ignore my mistakes in the run; for instance I didn't even bother with the 8-2 slowdown over the gap.

Thread: 1-2 346 remaining without double pipe jump in any% run

Started by: beardylocksbeardylocks

17 Apr 2020, 03:57

@AlphaDeltaHDAlphaDeltaHD My intent was to help new runners by showing that it's possible to obtain a 346 end time in the level without needing to do the second pipe lip jump. As far as WR goes, I should probably point out that I have NO desire to even go for a WR attempt. That wall clip to go into the warp pipe room in this level is pretty ridiculous as is lol. You've got me wondering though just how close a player could get to the optimal frame rule if they did this strat plus the wall clip. Anybody want to take that one on? 1, 2, 3, not it!

Also, my initial goal with speed-running this game was originally to see if I could beat it faster than it took a bartender at my favorite local pub to make me an old fashioned. I managed to pull that off in October so my next goal was to beat the game in 5:30 or less. Then 5:20, 5:15, 5:10, and so on. Now I'm just trying to go for as close to 5minutes as possible.

One major hangup in my current skill-set is fast 4-2; I struggle badly with doing the elevator bump in that level. I've even tried the strat of hitting the coin block by the mushroom block but when I do that I fail to turn in time to do the backwards bump. It's a blemish on my record that I'd like to remove in the future lol

So I've managed to come up with a consistent way of beating 1-2 in an any% run without having to do both pipe lip jumps. My question is related to optimal time in the level. I know the goal is to finish the level with 346 remaining (not going for wall clip); however, how does it play out with regards to frame rules? Is it a good strategy for people new to running the game for example? Below is a video of what I've come up with.

Thread: 370 possible on 1-1?

Started by: That_one_kidThat_one_kid

23 Mar 2020, 15:35 (edited: 23 Mar 2020, 15:47)

A 370 is definitely possible; but don't be discouraged by 369. I would say though if you're going for a 5minute or less run as a goal if you end up slower than that (let's say 368 remaining) I would probably reset at that point. If you're going for a personal best time though, don't worry about it.

Also, in general, there is nothing more discouraging than a runner telling somebody not to practice doing something. Nobody needs to have a specific time down in order to learn a new skill. If you want to learn things like pipe lip jumps, backwards bumps, etc. go for it. Have fun doing it as well. It's fun to learn new tricks like that.

I should have said hit the koopa, not kill it. It's pretty odd that sometimes it spawns two koopas versus three. It's interesting to me.
