Thread: Go quicker through Dust to Dust with my newfound strats!

Viable for any difficulty setting.

I finally found a way to use storage even when playing on Master and having all mods active (such as No Kills or Knockouts, Zero Damage, No Alerts and Slowed Movement, etc).

Compared to my current 1300 points WR run you can save at least 3 minutes, if the route I used there was fully optimized. I played that level in 9 min 9 seconds then, but it can be about 45 seconds or so faster. And with this new storage route, you can complete the level in at least 5 min 20 seconds.

Go here to see the video of the full level playthrough and more detailed instructions:

This means I can now totally destroy my WR time and be perhaps even around 10 minutes faster. PogChamp

(I might consider making another "tutorial run" of this route, with some things changed concerning in-game HUD stuff, such as no reticle and having the interaction prompts show. And also to show off the storage in the correct way.)

I see. That's what I did, apparently.
It's a bit of a fuss if you have to write all the tags and can't paste them though...?
Is there a more convenient way to get around this?
It'd be better if there were buttons to select and format text.

Did you figure this one out yet?
I watched your run and it seemed to me that you "emulated" Fripic's rather obsolete run. His tutorial is obsolete as well, because not everything was figured out by the time he did it, even if he tells you how to do the clip (sort of), but also he fails it on the first attempt, which may confuse you about how the trick works. It's nothing advanced, though. Perhaps that's the key to getting it, by not overthinking it.

For now, you can watch Artair Rose's tutorial (skip to 46:25):

or, this explanation he gave me: "When you come out of the animation to dial in the safe look slightly right and just wedge yourself using forward and left to strafe into it". By "come out of the animation" it means that you simply press "E" to interact with the dials and then right click to cancel interacting with the dials. So after having right clicked, you then immediately press "A" and "W" as well as moving the mouse to the right, which I believe helps the clip, but it might not make much difference.
The clip is very lenient and I actually got it on my first try. You can only do this on the game versions 1.0 and 1.1 (but 1.1 sucks, as you have to mess around a lot with the game folders to run the 32-bit executable for the game to even start properly without crashing).
Note however: by reverting to 1.0, you won't be able to load save files from game versions after 1.4 (which was a major game update). (To be able to play saves from newer versions you change to a version newer than 1.4.)

Summary:
Press "E" to interact with the dials.
Right click to cancel, while holding "A" and "W" to strafe into the safe, while also simultaneously moving the mouse to the right (so you look in the direction of the edge of the vault doors which you'll slide through.
Don't overthink it, but try it a few times till you get the hang of it. It's definitely not a hard trick to do.

Thread: Challenge Mode category added!

I made the decision to add this category.

It was a fuss to add it, I must admit, and it looks tacky to say the least. But that's how the site is designed. It has quite a few editing limitations and options.

I added one of my runs for one sub category/map as an example.

Any suggestions? Post here.

Light bulb...!

We could naturally make a category for collecting all the loot for specific maps.
For example, House of Blossoms (Chain & Gain) has 176 loot. So we could have a fastest time for that.
Whaddaya say?

"Stupify" all the guards (i.e. knock them out...) and grab all the loot.
I did this some time ago (while also keeping the quick chain going).
While it might not be the best guide at all, I have a video of it:

It wasn't me who added it. 🙂 It was already there since some time.
Anyway, please do a run.
Let's inject some energy and life into this totally underrated game!

I'm on kind of a hiatus right now with my runs (I have allergy problems so I'm quite tired and my eyes hurt), but I am definitely planning to attempt all categories for PB's/WR.

I am also thinking about making guides for the game, like what routes are the best and explaining all tricks, including speed tricks, the storage glitch and other useful tips.
I bet I will learn new stuff myself though when I start to speedrun the later chapters.
Speedrunning is all about research and preparation. And also trial and error and actually comparing routes and tactics and see which is the quickest in a short and long perspective (if needed). For one thing, record all your attempts and compare them side by side. Then you will learn the most and quickest and figure new things out.

Thread: Request: better definition of what to deduct for IGT

Started by: TheStunningParallelTheStunningParallel

I have investigated this further and it's clear that "loads" simply means the loading screens with a progress bar.
So that's what you deduct. Nothing more. The game's timer runs at all cut scenes.
Perhaps everyone already knows this.
In this regard, the IGT times are what will matter. RTA differences will not change a run's position on the leaderboards.

The notes only say "loads". That should probably mean loads that may vary in length depending on hardware?

There is also one occasion in The Drop that gives you a black screen, when you take the shortcut up the stairs instead of wading through the water and all. Can you count that as a load screen? The skip becomes rather useless otherwise, because if you do that part the intended way, there is no (or a very short) black screen (until "You couldn't set a cloth aflame if it was doused in oil, son"), because the game waits until the guards are in their positions to play that cut scene. In this sense that's not a load screen, but it'd still be sweet to get to include the time "saved" for pulling that trick off, sort of. 🙂

It's quite hard to figure out what to deduct from RTA not knowing when to start counting the time for a "load screen". A load will start from the moment you clicked "OK" for for example "Would you like to start this chapter?", where the game auto saves and starts preparing the level.

RTA may be the best way to compare run times, but are at the same time totally dependent on what hardware the runner was using (I myself have a monster PC, but I sometimes have long load times either way, with Thief being a poorly/unevenly optimized game).

Personally, I would take "IGT" more seriously if the rules were clear about what to remove from the RTA and it would be more fair to runners that way.
For example:
"A load screen starts from where you click "OK" in the prompt (your "last input" to go to a chapter or to certain areas) and lasts up until the moment of the first frames of in-game animation. Be they a skippable cutscene (e.g chapters 1, 2, 6, 7 or 8 ) or whatever map is then loaded."

I'm assuming the best and most precise way to calculate all these load screens properly is in an editing software. Doing it manually is quite finicky and rather arduous, but can also lead to quite random guessing.

Playing this "minigame" is a nice change of pace from time to time.
There are a few different types of this challenge. Chain & Gain (my preference), Chain & Gain Limited and Special Loot Hunt and there are also as many different maps; Northcrest Manor, Moira Asylum and House of Blossoms. The last one being the easiest to run and learn, IMO. And also it's my opinion it's the most entertaining map.

So, for a category we could have a best time for reaching 5,000,000 points, which is what you need to unlock the achievement. How you would calculate that in-game is done by figuring out the base multipliers for all the "goals".
Or, figure out the way you think is the best to play and see what score you get that is as close to 5,000,000 points (but not below) as possible. There are quite a few factors to take into consideration, to calculate the score.

I'm currently focused on the main game and chapters, so I don't think I'll be doing any challenge runs now, but I'm throwing this out there.
If anything, to try to boost this game's popularity around here.

True. All it would take is to include starting from the main menu, where the difficulty is shown.
Alternatively, you can go to the main menu after the run and "show" what difficulty you just played on.

It's dead silent on the Thief front.
I thought I had vitalized it when I solved the riddle with the so-called "Erin glitch".

Anyway. I might take this one on some day.
Just to clarify, an 870 pts run involves all mods active (on Master difficulty) except for "Iron Man" and "Chapter Saves Only".
This means you can use quicksave, die/reload during the run, if you choke.
