Thread: Blindfolded Speedrunning

Started by: MasterfulMudkipMasterfulMudkip

As alluded to multiple times with previous rejected runs, we are looking for a proof of concept (seeing that you are playing a game blindfolded), and nothing you mentioned fits that concept. Please refer to the blindfold part of the rules.

If you can't do this, don't run the category.

You can continue to submit runs, but please follow the moderator notes if it gets rejected.

Hey Rhythm Tengoku fans,

In order to maintain leaderboard accuracy, a few things have been updated:

- Emulators and/or USB loading are not allowed
- Video proof is required for all runs
- "Any%" and" All Perfects" sub-catergories have been added to the misc. "Blindfolded" category

Take care!

As long as you can in some way prove that you're using the balance board in the intended way, then you can submit under Intentional. Everything else falls under Not Intentional.

From the rules: Time starts with a new game after choosing your profile label and "Yes" is selected when asked to "Continue?".

This is for all categories.

Hey folks,

After some recent work with @CedrikLPleCedrikLPle and a demand for runs without controller footage, a "Not Intentional" sub-category has been added to ALL leaderboard categories. This will allow you to submit runs without controller footage and run the game in any way you'd like.

Please keep in mind that a video is still required to submit all runs and controller footage is still required for the "Intentional" sub-category.

....Also Perfect 10 and Island Cycling in both the Full-game and IL leaderboards have been added.... My bad on that oversight.

Have fun with those Balance Board speedruns!

My apologies for the late answer.

Yes! The main thing that I'm looking for is to see if the balance board is being used as intended by the game and if it matches up with the gameplay, so all is good here!

Thread: Tiny question

An often overlooked aspect in Wii/WiiU speedrunning is how menuing can be impacted by how inputs are done. In many games on these consoles, it doesn't just count the initial input press of the button when you menu, but also the release of the input to complete the action. This can sometimes allow the benefit of a single, well-timed input over mashing through a menu.

There is also the idea of version differences, language differences, console versions, etc.... All that good stuff.

I haven't heard from @WillRec20 and I haven't found a better solution to the audio issue, so I'd say resubmit the run.

If it becomes a contested category, then it'll probably have to go back to audio+video required.

You're absolutely correct that the game audio cuts out under normal capture circumstances and your previous run + @GamingLand 's other tabletop runs do not have audio during the gameplay yet they were accepted as runs in the absence of other comparable runs.

However, one of the most reliable ways to verify a run is through audio and it may not be an easy fix for most people. The part that makes this difficult is that your claim is beating the WR set by @WillRec20 who had audio during the whole gameplay.

So in that case...

Paging @WillRec20 or anyone else who may know:

What is the best way to have audio recorded for this? If it's not easily attainable, we may have to go on the honour system and allow an exception for audio for GamePad categories. My apologies in advance @Wipeoutjack7 , but if we can't find the easy fix, we'll use your new WR's.

@GamingLand I have thought about this before, but the idea behind "All Party Games Aside from the One That Doesn't Fit Into Speedrunning" seemed arbitrary. If others want this specifically, I'd be open to introducing the category.

Just another note; with any run in Wii Party U or any other party genre video game speedrun, beating the CPU is needed for a run to be considered completing the game as fast as possible. In this case, you would have to beat the CPU's in each TV Party game.

Thread: Frequently Asked Questions

Started by: TehWhackTehWhack

(edited: )

Many people have been asking about the rules surrounding this leaderboard. I'll address a few things so I don't have to copy and paste each time.

Also, if you have any other questions related to the leaderboard or the game in general, feel free to ask it here!

Q: Is a video required to submit a run?

A: Yes

Q: Do I need to have controller footage to submit a run?

A: Yes for the Intentional sub-category. No for the Not Intentional sub-category.

Q: I don't have a way to film a controller cam though. Why is this needed?

A: Mainly, there is a controller calibration exploit that allows the player to use the balance board in multiple ways aside from the way instructed by the game (for example: using your hands instead of feet) potentially making the game easier.
This leaderboard Intentional sub-category is strictly for the intended control method of the game with proof.

Q: I can't submit controller footage, so what do I do?

EDITED A: Due to an increased interest, a "Not Intended" sub-category has been added to the full leaderboard for people who can't submit controller footage.

Q: I don't want to show controller footage because <insert reason here>

A: Not a question, but something I've heard before. You can send me verification footage over Discord/Twitch/Twitter or you can attach another link to verification when you submit your run that can be deleted before verifying the run (don't forgot to request it though!). If you can't do this, please refer to the question above.

That's all for now!

Sept. 29, 2019 Edit: "Not Intentional" sub-category has been added!

@Wipeoutjack7 , I have considered limiting each TV Party subcategory to 3 opponents.

While the Opponent Skill Level does not change the core mechanics of the game, something like the Number of Opponents changes the game on a fundamental level. With time, if no one else runs different amount of opponents and there are many 3 Opponent runs, then the chance of limiting it to the 3 Opponent game is possible.

Hey @GamingLand and @Wipeoutjack7 ! Thanks for sharing the run ideas.

Everything you've shown with videos and a bit more have been made into categories, 23 categories to be exact.

TV Party, GamePad Party, and Battle of the Minigames have all been added as header categories with subcategories added for each. GamePad Island, Tabletop Foosball, Animal Matchup, and Puzzle Blockade have been left out as subcategories due to the games being either multiplayer based or set-time games.

Just like with 1 vs. rivals, it is still required to specify the Opponent Skill Level with each submission.

Feel free to submit runs!
