Thread: Can I speedrun a game I don't have experience with?

Even if you die a lot, if you're trying to go as fast as possible in general, it should qualify. Your primary goal is to reach the end goal in as little time as possible, right? If you're actively trying to achieve that goal in a playthrough, no matter how slow, it should qualify, in my opinion.

Of course if you're actively trying then you will not be getting a time of 10 hours in a game in which below 10 minutes is the norm for intermediate and/or beginner players.

Thread: What is your Favorite speed game to play/watch

Started by: femsterfemster

Favourite to play: either Sonic Adventure 2: Battle or Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. It generally depends on my mood lol.

Favourite to watch: probably Sonic Adventure 2.

Favourite to watch (TAS): definitely SA2B.

Favourite to TAS: either SA2B or Donkey Kong Country 2: GBA. The former is a lot more difficult to TAS (optimally) than the latter, though, so it depends on whether I want a a challenge or not lol.

What does that thread have anything to do with the discussion here?

A completely blind run that makes an effort to beat the game as quick as possible, no matter how slow, meets both of these criterias. It would be obvious whether a run tries to beat a run as quick as possible or not.

Edit: I took a long time to comment so I missed a few posts lol. I was commenting on the post after my last post.

"I'm not sure if you're asking that or the possibility to submit a blindrun, that is a no no."
@xenkaroshixenkaroshi
Why is submitting a blind run a "no no"? There is no reason you can't submit your first ever run. If a moderator rejects a run for being a blind run, that's kind of a dick move on them in my opinion. Some people, like me, like to preserve their full PB history, from their first ever run to their current PB.

To clarify: when I say blind run, I mean playing through the game with no knowledge, but still trying to go as fast as possible. So I'm not slowing down to take in random details of the game like a casual player would.

I'm guessing you are talking about the puzzle skip in "Skipless" runs.
If you are failing right at the end of hitting the goal ring, I once had the same issue. There normally shouldn't be an issue and I always hold up, but you can also go up and then half a second or less after you start falling, hold down after you fall.

Procrastinate literally everything. Though regardless of procrastination, I managed to reach a major checkpoint in one of my TASes.

Thread: Critical questions to ask about speedrunning.

1. It is tough knowing which game I have spent playing the longest. Outside of TASing, it is probably Sonic Adventure 2, but I have also spent a long time playing Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. If we include TASing, it would definitely be SA2, but I have also TASed Donkey Kong Country 2 GBA version a lot. I'll have to place SA2 as the longest. It is a challenging game with an extremely high skill ceiling.

2. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is my favourite game to speedrun. I think SA2 is a better speedgame, but I enjoy MLDT the most. A lack of free time and motivation to speedrun the game however makes me avoid the run, however had I had both I would definitely run it more. I enjoy the glitches and the glitchless parts and, even in Easy Mode, some of the bosses are very challenging thanks to the glitches.

3. Taking Mario & Luigi: Dream Team as an example: I currently have the world record, about 30 minutes faster than Snoion's time, who is second place. However I consider Snoion to be better at the game than I am. Two skips were discovered since his run, which is largely why I got world record. I am very confident I can beat Snoion's WR without using more skips than he did, however in my attempts at doing so I took more attempts than he did to get kind of close-ish. Then I (accidentally!) discovered a major skip saving about 35 minutes (the other skip saves 5 minutes), so I ended up getting an easy world record thanks to the skip. He could definitely get world record back relatively quickly if he so wished. Getting world record does not make you the best.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team -- in almost all battles, you want to die in order to go to Easy Mode. When you die, you have 3 prompts:
- Retry
- Retry (Easy Mode)
- Quit to Title Screen.

If you select "Retry (Easy Mode)", it will ask whether you are sure you want to go to use Easy Mode. If you select "Quit to title screen", however, it does NOT ask you for confirmation. It is very easy to accidentally highlight the last option: if you press down to go down a bit too early, you'll be holding down while the game shows the three options. Because according to the game you're "holding down", it scrolls down as if you were holding down to scroll through a long list. This means that if you press down just a bit too early, you will be select the last option and not the Easy Mode option.

Result?
Your run dies.

This has happened to me during Glitchless speedruns before. I never ever save during Glitchless, and I once lost a run like that six hours in. It was painful. Has happened a few times in Any% too.

Sonic Adventure 2 - I once fell asleep during a 180 Emblems run, my enemy here being my bed. I was over an hour ahead.

Any%, I'm guessing?
(As a side note, SMW's Any% would have to either be a different route or 11 Exits Orb, [fill in details here])

Snodeca -
Sno - snow. I love winter, I love snow, and I absolutely adore cold weather. It's also darker outside, and I'm a night owl, I absolutely prefer the night together with the cold weather. I find it extremely relaxing. I used to love romance too and I find snow and cold weather romantic, so with my previous love for romance it also played a role. I have since then ..."suffered" pain but it's extremely personal lol.

Deca - Math! I think it's "10" in Latin. It's not at all my favourite number, but it's the one that sounded the best. My favourite number at the time of creation was 122, which would likely be far too big to sound good. Now it's 58 which probably would still sound bad but (sno)deca sounds the best IMO. I love math quite a bit, and I thought I would integrate that in my username.

And then I combined the two and voila, Snodeca is born! I had a lot of other names before this one, but explaining all of them would be a bit dumb. I'm not planning on changing my username for a billionth time though lol.

@beponekobeponeko you forgot to say that neko means cat in Japanese 🙂 ( 猫, ねこ )

Ignore it. The only instance it is useful for is for 180 Emblems speedruns. You get Magic Hands after finishing both Hero Story and Dark Story (Finish CE m2 and m3 and then get Magic Hands in m4 while getting A-Rank of course), and then you do Crazy Gadget Skip in M5 while using Magic Hands to get as many points as possible.

Theoretically you could get Magic Hands in City Escape M1 and then do CGS on all CG m1, m4 and m5. An optimal 180 Emblems TAS would certainly do this, as there is a way to land directly into the Magic Hands room using a variant of City Escape Skip (that might have only been done once).

Other than that, however, Magic Hands is utter trash and should not be gotten unless you want world record in 180 Emblems, for which you need to get very good first anyway because Talon is a beast in 180 Emblems. One day his throne shall be taken.

All Expert Challenges already covers all Attack Pieces and all Pi'illos (You need to have excellent with each attak AND you have to revive all 52(?) Pi'illos to obtain one of the attacks) and is a category that I plan to run one day (and by saying this I must do it now as a promise). Quests aren't necessary, nor are beans.

If you want a 100% run, then I would probably do:

All Expert Challenges, which includes all attacks and all Pi'illos
All Beans, all badges, all blocks.
All S-Ranks for the Skillathon/Broque Madame challenges and all puzzles for Kylie Koopa.
And of course All Bosses + X Bosses (which subsequently requires all Ultibed Parts)

Basically, all trackable things that can be undone. You can only track blocks at the end of the game which sucks, but it IS trackable. This is very very very arbitrary though as there is no official 100% list.

Though do not expect either All Expert Challenges and especially not 100% to ever appear on the leaderboards. Maybe expect All Bosses, I do want to run this and this isn't too arbitrary in my opinion. [I do have a bad habit of not running for a bit after PBing so expect a few months before I actually start doing All Bosses runs (I am including the X Bosses)]
