Thread: HMC star (just starting have some questions)

You have to build up a dash while standing still, then jump still on the first jump, then move forward on the second jump. this gives you more height and distance than anything else with yoshi. Also you have to slow yourself down at the right time during the double jump, because otherwise you might either go under the platform, or not reach it. if you aren't comfortable with this, you can just do both sunshine isle and 1 of the slide stars (normally we only do 1 or the other). This doesn't lose much time at all really.

You can submit times without videos to any category But of course we will use our common sense and if a questionable time is submitted from someone who we know nothing about then we might reject it (probably after some discussion between the mods).

Thread: New categories (ik here we go again)

31 star doesn't really make any sense seeing as you would be allowing 1 rabbit clip but not the other (also we would be allowing the harder one but not the easier one, which makes even less sense).

3 star would be ok if it were humanly possible. After talking with the person who TASed that skip I really really doubt it is (you can't get the rabbit close enough to the wall to do the clip in the same way as the other 2 rabbit clips, there's no delayed jumps after falling off ledges in the lobby which makes OoB movement extremely difficult in itself, and there's no ledges that you can stand for more than a frame to do line ups and stuff). Of course if someone wants to prove me wrong (and I would be pretty excited if someone could) it could be added, but I don't think it will, so there's no point adding a category that will never have a run on it.

120 star is kinda arbitrary but a somewhat interesting idea. If people actually want to run it then I wouldn't see a problem with adding it to the misc categories.

For 100%, does catching the rabbits really add anything? Personally It seems really pointless to me, and then you could also say things like "didn't open all cannons, not 100%, or didn't get max coins in each level, not 100%".

149 kind of has a place there, even though there aren't runs up. It is 150 star without the RNG. It's the best way to get good at 150 star really. Why waste 20 minutes each run on something that is not developing your skill at all?

The BitDW and BitFS categories came from races on SRL. They have as many runners as the main categories so why would it make sense to remove them? They are a good taster for people interested in getting into the game.

Thread: IS VC banned? If it's not, do some glitches not work on it? If so, which categories are unplayable on VC?

Started by: LaxxiusLaxxius

I think the general consensus is that there are no means for VC to be banned, however it does have faster loading zones than DS, and seeing as it has not been released in the US, it would kind suck for all the US runners if someone got a time on VC that was unbeatable on DS.
On the other hand, the Wii U is exploitable now, so it is possible for US runners to load the European game onto their US Wii Us.
My personal opinion in it is that I won't switch over unless I have to (if someone beats my times on VC and I can't really compete on DS). This is 1, because the camera controls on Wii U are awful, and 2, I don't want to force other runners to have to start using it to get WRs.
If you want to start running on it then by all means do. There may be the occasional person that gets salty about it, but I think in general the community would be happy that it is getting more people into running the game.
As for glitches, the only significant glitch that does not work on it is the glowing rabbit glitch. This will lose a fair bit of time in 150 star, however the faster loading times may make up for this, or at least come close to making up for it. It is also the EU version, which I am 99% sure has worse glowing rabbit RNG than both US versions. For all other categories it pretty much makes no difference though.
There are a few smaller things that are different (100 1-up glitch doesn't work in WF, killing a goomba as metal wario only gives 1 coin instead of 2 etc) but these don't affect 80, 50, 8 or 1 star runs at all.

Thread: Is Emulator Banned?

Started by: RetroRunsRetroRuns

It was desmume (either 0.9.11 or 0.9.8, not really sure). If you want to run on emulator then nothing is going to stop you, it just won't display by default on the leaderboards. To be honest, the loading times are probably about the same as Wii-U VC, and if we allow that then it is probably fair to allow emulator too (although whether VC is allowed is a completely different discussion as it is not available on US consoles yet, and the majority of runners are from the US, so I think it would be kind of shitty to allow it for that reason, but at the same time it is a legit release of the game so it is also kind of shitty to ban it) 😛

Thread: Question in 149 star

Started by: PodzPodz

There is a reason that it is only a "misc category" 😛
I only put it on there because me and fox were discussing having it up as a practice category a while back (in the same way that the 2 bowser categories are irrelevent, but just good for practice/learning). Even with the new rabbit method, it is still a lot of RNG (it only requires good RNG once rather than 8 times, but each "check" takes a lot longer each time). I think people overestimate how much time it saves. If anything it will make times vary more than the old "legit" method (it could take 1 minute, or it could take 15 minutes, whereas the old method is probably 10 minutes to 20 minutes), which would mean that having a 149 star category actually makes even more sense.
Anyway, does it really hurt anyone to have it up there? 😛

I very very rarely die from this, and I just hold up the whole time. I honestly don't know why you would die most of the time (unless you are long jumping into the corner instead of slide kicking 😛 )

What is actually needed in terms of tech? If its literally just TVs, cap cards, webcam, a mic or 2 etc I could bring a few things along. I mean, worst case, someone brings a laptop to stream off of, 1 TV to play on, a cap card, a web cam and a mic and then it can at least happen right. Not exactly elegent, but for a small event I don't see what's wrong with that.

Thread: Times without videos on the leaderboards

Started by: ParadoxKarlParadoxKarl

I'm just curious as to what people think about times being on the leaderboards that have no videos.

I understand that capturing ds footage isn't exactly easy or cheap, so there will always be people who do runs and don't have videos, and personally I don't really care if people try to fake their times (not saying that anyone has or would), but having no requirements of proof means that people could get away with it.

Before now I have more or less just accepted any run that has been submitted, but as the community has grown a bit, I was just wondering if people are happy with it being like this or if you would want some sort of proof for times to be on there. Whether it be 100% compulsory to have a video, have a requirement for either having video or splits, only accept times (without proof) from reputable runners etc.

Also, if you want a change, what would you want to do about current times on the leaderboards that don't have proof?

Stuck with any part of it in particular?

Also, I wouldn't really advise starting on 1 star. If you really want start on something with skips, then maybe look at 8 star (or even 50 star), and then work towards 1 star when you are comfortable with the other clips.

Damn, I didn't realise that multiplay was based in Southampton. That's where I live. Maybe I should turn up at their office and tell them to get their shit together. 😛

Thread: Setup for 8 star door skip corner clip?

Started by: 13440

I just hold down right after the door, then press X twice at the right time. If you do it too early then you will get the thing when you will go to the top of the corner but won't clip. If you do it too late then you won't get enough (or even any) hight in the corner.

Aside from whether it is allowed or not, there's 1 other big reason why I wouldn't want to play on emulator... the camera controls. Camera controls are on the touch screen so there's no easy way to move the camera in anyway other than locking it behind you (excluding using a lua script to bind a button to pressing the touch screen in a certain place, which is kinda cheating?? idk)

Pretty good reason for it to be banned (ds on left, emu on right) ^
Excuse the lack of effort gone into that video.

At the moment you can submit runs on emulator, but they wont show on the leaderboard by default (only if you choose "platforms & emulator"). As for whether the are completely banned idk... there's not really been much of a discussion about it. But its not really fair to compare emulator times to ds times.

Thread: How can I get a consistent set up for the second rabbit clip?

Started by: 13440

It is never going to be consistent because the rabbit reaction times are random (as far as we know), therefore even with setups it is in a different place every time. It is the hardest part of the run imo.

I'm not sure if you have seen benstephen's setup (he doesn't enable past broadcasts so can't show you), but his seems decent and might be worth a try. Mine is just to hold up going up the stairs then up-right at the top, but you still have to make sure you get there at the right time (slowing yourself down just enough based on the reaction time of the rabbit).
