Thread: Game Boy Speedrunning Website (GBrunners.com)

Started by: MoelleMoelle

There has been a lot of discussion and confusion going on when it comes to speedrunning Game Boy / Game Boy Color games in the past, especially when it comes to picking the correct emulator or even hardware. Although the Game Boy community is relatively small compared to more popular systems like NES and SNES, we do our best to inform newcomers to the do's and don'ts to get them started.

A few threads have been made already on this website, where information can be gathered. But we decided to make a separate website where everyone can find the information they need bundled together. Not only does it contain all the info you need about speedrunning Game Boy games, there are also pages about the Tiny Ten speedrunning race, the GB Monthly speedrun challenge, a list of dedicated GB streamers and all kinds of articles about Game Boy in general. In the future we will also provide in tutorials for a whole bunch of Game Boy games.

Spread the word to your friends and family and bookmark www.gbrunners.com already, won't you?

Thread: The longstanding issue of emulator submissions

Started by: Oh_DeeROh_DeeR

Although contacting runners or moderators (which is also still a hassle as it can't be done on the site itself yet) usually ends up in an agreement, there are still some rotten apples in the bunch.

I still remember the person who didnt want to leave VBA behind "because now the game feels slower and I have to relearn it completely".

We have been trying to spread the word about the emulator problem for months, heck even years, but it's impossible to reach everyone so we still have to check every video of new runners or games thoroughly to see what is being used. Having an option to let us know in advance would solve a lot of unnecessary work in the future.

If it was up to me, the moment you select VBA as an emulator option, the run should be denied with a message showing up why.

Using VBA is literally like doing sports under the influence of performance enhancing drugs. It didn't fly for Lance Armstrong, so it shouldn't fly for anyone.

Check out http://www.speedrun.com/Speedrunning/thread/4sdl9 if you want more information about differences between emulators.

01. Banishing Racer [Beat World 3]

Check out the runs on: http://www.speedrun.com/Banishing_Racer

Rules:
- Split at the "Stage 3 Cleared" screen.

02. Ultraman Ball [Full Run]

Check out the runs on: http://www.speedrun.com/ultramanball

Rules:
- Split when screen goes blank after final boss fight.

03. Miracle Adventure of Esparks [Full Run]

Check out the runs on: http://www.speedrun.com/Miracle_Adventure_of_Esparks

Rules:
- Split as the final boss blows up and you lose control of character.

Tips & Tricks:
- The quick kill on the final boss is rather easy. Just jump, attack and keep pressing right during invincibility frames to get on up there. Don't be discouraged if it fails the first few attempts. The window to kill him quickly might be a little tight, but the "trick" sure isn't!

04. Batman [Full Run]

Check out the runs on: http://www.speedrun.com/batgun

Rules:
- Split when Batman disappears from the game screen.

Tips & Tricks:
- You can deal more damage to Joker by shooting him in the face. You see him flinch backwards when that happens. Try it for a much quicker fight then just wailing on his body.

Just to be clear: I love Pokémon games, only not in a race setting as IMO the start/tutorial section is just a damn waste of time. But we'll see, mighty it will get in this time if it becomes a crowd favorite.

Tail Gator and CV II are on the approved list in any case.

We are gonna try and test as many games in the upcoming weeks/months so we don't have to bother too much anymore with that in the future and just have a list to pick from.

Thread: Everything you need to know about the Portable Marathon

Started by: MoelleMoelle

History
---------

The Portable Marathon started out as an in chat joke between runners/streamers back in 2014 during the weeks leading up to one of the Best of NES marathons. As we felt it was sad that GameBoy games didn't get appreciated as much as other platforms, this joking around eventually lead to making an actual marathon.

Shortly after the announcement of PM#1, participants started calling it the Tiny Ten, as opposed to the Big Twenty name the NES marathon achieved. Although the official name still remains the Portable Marathon, calling it the Tiny Ten has become a staple in the community.

Although the first two editions of PM/TT consist solely of original GB games, later editions will include GBC, GBA and onwards. The main purpose of the marathon is to spread the love for these portable gems and to make the platform become more popular in the speedrun community.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How & When
----------------

Portable Marathon #2 will take place on the 7th of November, starting between 1PM/2PM EDT and will be hosted on the ESA channel.

Although there isn't a requirement to register in advance, if you want to, you can leave a reply in this thread. An hour or two before the actual marathon will start, we will open a racing room on the SRL IRC channel for everybody to join. We will close entries 20 minutes before the start.

To qualify for entering the race we do suggest having the ability to be able to stream (for restreaming purposes on our end) and to have an actual SRL account.

If you still want to play together with everybody without meeting these requirements, feel free to do so of course!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tools
------

For those of you who are playing with an emulator: VBA is banned! This due to it running the games too fast. Bizhawk, Gambatte or BGB are recommended.

For those of you who are playing on console: Super Game Boy is banned! This is due to it running the games too fast. Super Game Boy 2 or GC Game Boy Player are recommended. Doesn't matter if you use an Everdrive or the actual games of course.

Thread: Looking For Volunteers To Help

Started by: MoelleMoelle

After the unbridled success of the first Portable Marathon, the time has come to start working on the second one. I mostly did everything myself the last time and I won't have that much free time to work on it constantly this time around. Therefor I am looking for volunteers who are willing to help out with whatever they can. If you feel you can help a hand with any of the following things, please let me know.

Commentating:

Last time, the marathon got hosted on the ESA channel (and I'm sure we can do that again) but having only 3 commentators (me, Bangerra, Tremane) was not enough, especially because we had to keep going for hours straight. Also we didn't have enough knowledge of every game to keep it interesting for that long. If we can get a set of commentators to rotate through, depending on knowledge of the current game or whenever someone needs a break, it will be less stressful for ourselves and more fun to listen to for the viewers.

Promoting:

Have a million followers on your channel or on your twitter account? Help spread the word about the marathon! Get people to watch or even join the race. Use our custom made promotion material (coming soon) to spice things up and get everybody aboard the HYPE train. Choo, Choo!

Graphics:

You can also help out by making a logo, advertisement poster, banner, stream skin, ... Anything you can think off. I usually do this myself and I will do my best to make stuff but time is an issue at the moment. It's also better to have multiple people work together on stuff like this so we can give each other feedback and improve.

If there is any other role you think you can perform in helping out, please let it know!

Dear admins,

Would you be so kind to add "Portable Marathon" as a thread under the Marathon section of the forums?

We are currently setting up our second edition and would like to promote it some more. Although a thread exists on the SDA forums (see link below) it doesn't seem to be able to get the word spread as much as it would on speedrun.com.

Portable Marathon #1 SDA thread: http://tinyurl.com/ozm6l2k
Portable Marathon #2 SDA thread: http://tinyurl.com/qfu9cjz

A short description: The portable marathon exists of 10 original Game Boy games (other portable platforms in the future). It gets hosted on the ESA twitch channel thanks to the support of Bangerra. The main focus of the marathon is to showcase (unheard of) Gameboy games to the speedrun community in order to expand the love for the platform.

Thanks in advance.
