Thread: Delays for BBG?

Started by: pensrock_12pensrock_12

this google doc has most of the main setups https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qpuH9lPcwxUhBTFZAm68l2kCUm1nCviBLp-THBnXzmc/edit#gid=0
the first 'optimal' setup on -7.12 is most commonly used (fr 539), but fr 540 is useful as a backup

@grodney2000grodney2000 4:56.261 = 8-K with no lag (four framerules faster than 4:57.660). One frame added is 4:56.279

Thread: Release: LiveSplit autosplitter for SMB1 (and 2J, ish) (supports Nestopia v1.40 and FCEUX 2.2.3)

Started by: periwinkleperiwinkle

Mesen has a runahead feature that literally skips frames of gameplay in order to reduce lag. The developer of the emulator said himself that it shouldn't be allowed for speedrunning.

You can download nestopia here http://nestopia.sourceforge.net/ (nestopia v1.40 binary)

Pressing left+right isn't possible on a standard NES controller under regular circumstances, so it's not allowed. Left+Right also affects acceleration in this game, so it would provide an unfair advantage.

Thread: Audio is now required for all submissions

Started by: roopert83roopert83

Sorry if this counts as a necro, but does there have to be audio continuously through the entire run? I occasionally have to mute my mic if people come in to my room during a run, and it would be annoying if 10-20 seconds of no audio invalidated the whole run.

Thread: 8-4 Intermediate wall jump ?

Started by: lokiwiderlokiwider

LeKukie has a slightly easier 2 frame walljump setup that gives you even more frames on the jump, as @eddiecatgamingeddiecatgaming says.

You do two frame setup as usual by walking off the first pipe and pressing B mid air, jump to hit the pixel at a usual spot, and do a backwards jump at the pipe instead of a forwards jump. By doing a backwards jump, Mario clips slightly into the pipe, which gives you more frames to jump as you're in the pipe for more frames. It also makes the walljump faster as you are turned backwards after jumping off the pipe, which makes him accelerate faster after the jump.

Here is a video comparing the speed of the two walljumps

Thread: is 4:54 possible?

Started by: [Deleted user]

This has already been discussed in far greater detail on the forums then it ever needed to be. I will repost when I said 2 months ago.
Is 4:54 possible? Yes
Will it happen? Probably not, but maybe, and maybe is all we can possibly say right now.
Will it happen any time soon? No.
Nothing has changed, and nothing will change with the knowledge we currently have.

Thread: 4-2 bottom row clip

Started by: x3nonx3non

No. To my knowledge, you would need something to give you more time in the air once you're in gap, such as a bounce off a koopa. Additionally, one block gap floor clips are incredibly precise, even for a tas, so they certainly couldn't be done RTA even if a koopa were there.

- The mods aren't adding any new categories for the forseeable future
- Left+Right would barely help, and the only place where you could easily save time is 8-4 water section
- People wouldn't want to put in the effort to get seriously good any% times in a category extension

Thread: Potential All-Stars time save?

Started by: x3nonx3non

That loses time as you still have to walk to the castle to have the timer start counting down.

Edit: To add more information, the reason this happens is because the backwards pole glitch is activated in 8-2 on the Japanese version of the game. When Mario grabs the pole during "bbg", he instantly snaps to the other side of the pole, but he isn't high enough to land on top of the flagpole block, just like regular bbg. As a result, he's ejected to the left of the right side of the pole, which happens to be inside the flagpole block. The rest of the end level cutscene plays out as usual where Mario walks to the right until he reaches a solid block, which in this case is the castle.

Full flagpole glitch crashes on both versions, but you aren't doing a full flagpole glitch here thanks to the backwards pole glitch.

Thread: Probably the easiest way to save 3 framerules in 1-2 (all stars)

Started by: Lul_ecks_deeLul_ecks_dee

I should point out that the only reason I'm doing this setup is that my snes controller doesn't let me do one frame jumps consistently at all, making 1-2g near impossible to do consistently. This is still definitely a bit easier than 1-2g though, so it's worth going for if you only want a 4:58, not a 4:57

Edit: Doing this makes the clip a LOT easier if anyone else is thinking of doing this

Thread: 370 possible on 1-1?

Started by: That_one_kidThat_one_kid

Getting a 380 in the underground only saves one framerule, and sometimes getting a 379 can put you on the same framerule as a 380. You absolutely do NOT need to reset over not getting a 380 until you're going for a sub 5. You're best plan of action is to try to get a deathless run without going for particularly fast strategies, and never reset for the first few runs even if you lose a ton of time. Once you get a deathless run, you should try to replicate that run but clean up mistakes, and don't add in faster strats until you have a very clean run with safer strats.

The head (and only) moderator for Toadette's Christmas Adventure appears to have deleted their account, so there is no moderator for that game. While the game is very inactive, there still needs to be at least one moderator there so that runs can be verified if and when they are submitted. Seeing as I have wr for that game and I have experience with timing NES runs, I'd be an easy person to quickly add as a moderator there. Thanks

Thread: Emulators

Started by: AR007AR007

I believe the ruling is that you have to use those exact emulators - there is a Nestopia core for Retroarch, but Retroarch is banned as it has lag reduction built in that isn't present on console. However, there have been some cases, such as with LeKukie, where specific variants on the emulators are allowed. It's easier though if you just use the standard emulators as long as you have access to some form of computer.
