Thread: Eco Route / Green Strategy Question

Started by: MilkToastMilkToast

Hello,
I can't be sure for the Amiga version, because I always play the PC floppy disc version (the one with most bugs).
Prospere went to the point where Chani got kidnapped by the Harkonnen. Were you at the same point when you tried that strategy?
Or maybe the plants didn't grow enough? Maybe try to wait a bit more?
Then again, I can't be sure for the Amiga version, perhaps it just doesn't work.

Given all the information we have now on game technical requirements and DosBox performance, we can now decide that it is reasonable to limit the Dosbox emulation speed at 10000 cycles max.
Unfortunately, that cancels your last run.

I'm very interested with your tests in a real hardware. I remember playing Dune on a Pentium I back in the days, and I remember it a little bit slower than 10000 cycles. But hey, it was a long long time ago.
Let me know when you have some results.

Oh, my! You're totally right!
I got confused by the 12am hour (I never know if it's noon or midnight).
I'm so sorry, I decided not to substract the starting time for simplicity reasons, and now it's me who make calculation mistakes. I feel a bit stupid.

Well, sorry for the delay, but you're now officially world champion of Dune speedrunning, category segmented in-game time! 🙂

For clarification: in-game time is measured by saving outside the Harkonnen palace just before the end of the game. Do NOT substract the starting time. That's for consistency reasons.
I retimed Kujgot and Slowham runs (amazing times btw).

My technical problem is not for emulating the game, it's for emulating and streaming at the same time. It's OBS that takes the majority of my computer resources.
For more than a year, you ran at 10000 cycles and I didn't know. When I followed suit, and beated your time, you one-sidedly decided to change your settings to 30000.
And now, if I understand well, you want to change again. Please understand it's not possible to change all the time.
Your source on tasvideos.org also states "Use the largest possible value that you think makes the game run more fluently, but not larger." That's to avoid distorsion.
According to this source https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Dune floppy disk game requirements are a 286 processor. That's 6MHz to 20MHz, so it corresponds to 6000 cycles to 20000 cycles in DOSBox. Thus it mustn't be played faster.
I say we should keep 10000 cycles max for consistency with the other categories, and because the majority of the runs were made with these settings.
In any case your last run at 30000 cycles is above reasonable limits and should be cancelled.

I tried to play at 30000 cycles, but it's a bit too much for my computer, it lags sometimes.
I'm a bit frustrated to be disqualified at Dune speedruning just for technical reasons.
Moreover, at 30000 cycles the game is way faster than it was in the 90s. It feels different, and that bothers me. We may speedrun games but we shouldn't change the way the game behaves.

I found the cause of the bug eventually.
It happens if you meet Liet Kynes before leaving Gurney Hallek in a sietch to train Fremen.

A strange bug happened in my last 3 runs, Chani just disappeard from the game!
So I couldn't finish the game or cure the sick Fremen (who happened to be my main troups, of course).
I don't get how this bug happens. Does someone have a clue for this?

Created some categories. I also added some rules. You can check if everything is okay with you 🙂

I agree completely, we should make categories.
Apparently we've been named moderators for Dune (I suspect it's because we're the only speedrunners on it 😃 ) so I don't know if we are supposed to do that ourselves. ??

Dune has an in-game time counter, which is displayed when saving/loading. It seems that the in-game time for the runs recorded in the website are mostly wrong. Kujgot didn't finish the game in 24 hours but 24 days in-game, which is the best in-game time in all recorded runs (but it doesn't appear that way on the site). Prospere didn't finish the game in 44 minutes in-game, but 44 minutes in real time, which is the best real time.
Should we correct all the times for the Dune speedruns?

Also, Dune has a time-skipping feature, which can allow you to same real time at the cost of in-game time. So, you would run the game diffrently if you want to optimize real time or in-game time.

Hello Dat, sorry for the late reply.
In fact, the run at 3rd place is finished, but was posted to youtube in 15 minute segments. If you want to see the whole run, you have to watch the entire video list.
And yes, there is very recent activity, since I just beated my own record and I'm about to submit the video to the site 🙂

Don't hesitate to run the game, it's great and fun ^^

Started by: BeliazBeliaz

I wanted to try a little Dune speedrun, I just planned to train, but in the end I finished the game in 3h06min or so, and 44days6h in-game time.
It was with the floppy version (with DOS-box), which is faster than the CD-ROM version.
I made a couple of mistakes, so this time is definitely beatable.

I looked at the videos for the current WR for Dune. There is in fact a small mistake with the time. The in-game time for the WR is 24days 22h30min. The "real world" time is something about 3h15, since it's done with 13 videos about 15min each. It's really an impressive time.
I don't know if it's possible to correct the time.

Last time I played Dune, it was the CD version, I didn't skip any cinematics or dialogue, had to load my save a couple of times, and I finished in about 11 hours (and about 70days in-game). So, if you intend to do a 24h marathon, I sugest you also choose another game for the rest of the time. Dune is just a wonderful choice, I love it 🙂

Hello!
I see there is no "Glitchless" category for The Legend of Zelda. Or maybe I just missed it?
I think it could be interesting, to help compare between the different runs, because obviously a run using glitches would be faster than a glitchless one.
But I don't know if other persons are interested.
