Thread: Changing the "Time ends when..." rule

Since nobody showed opposition, the change becomes effective as of today.
A few runners might receive a notification in regards to the fact that their time on the leaderboard was updated, just a heads up.

Yeah, I see what you're saying, and yes, you always want to try and finish as close as possible to the exit to move from one round to the next one, but as far as categories based on partial completion go, I really don't think it should be required for you to run to the exit as fast as possible to get to the next round that you're not going to play anyway; your job should be done once the 20th or the 50th round of the game gets cleared, which again happens once the game tells you you've cleared that round, not when you exit it.

I see what you're saying there, but it's not even really about making it easier to time it at the end of the day, as there's a few visual cues that allow for that in some circumstances as you mentioned anyway.
Point is there is no reason why you'd have to walk out the door to begin with to consider a round completed, so from a more technical standpoint, if the categories require the completion of 20 or 50 rounds, then those rounds are completed literally once the game says it, not when Toad takes the door and leaves, making it very unnecessary to set the end of the run further than when Round Clear appears.
I would just like to make things more technically proper and less arbitrary in general with this change.

Hi all,
I have been thinking for a while about suggesting to change the rule that establishes when a run is supposed to end, as I personally think it would be a good thing, so I would like to hear the opinions of people who ran/run the game. This change would only apply to the categories "20 Rounds" and "50 Rounds".
The current rule states that the run "ends on leaving level 20/50", which is very arbitrary both in terms of wording and in terms of timing. My suggestion would be to let the run end on the frame when Round Clear appears on screen: this would actually make the timing much more precise, and the job of mods easier, and will allow us to frame count runs more precisely whenever that becomes a necessity.
Beside, checking how the game works in the TAS editor, it is easy to see how even the game itself considers the round completed on that frame: the layout of every round is in fact predetermined by the frame you end the previous round on, and the frame the game considers to do so is exactly the frame when Round Clear appears on screen.
In case this change was approved, runs that have already been submitted would be retimed, and, as I already checked, there would be no changes in terms of ranking, so everyone would keep their position on the leaderboards.
I would like to know what runners and mods think about this, so we can make a decision all together.

I personally think 20 Rounds is a nice, quick and easy category already, I wouldn't want to add an even shorter category.

I was playing on Everdrive for Famicom, English translated version of the game since it was my first playthrough. It was very random and absolutely unexpected of course, really wish I was recording, not cause it could be any useful to the run probably, but just because of how weird it looked.
But yeah, thank you all for taking a look at this 😃

Doubt anyone else here experienced the same, but maybe someone has run into a similar situation and can help me understand what happened.

I was casually playing through the game, reached Area 4, explored it all or as much as possible anyway, and hit a wall since I couldn't figure out where else to go to progress, so I got to the top of the elevator room and stood on the top platform for a while, thinking of what I hadn't tried to do yet. I then got distracted and didn't look at the screen for about 15 seconds, only to find out when I looked back at it that the screen was flashing with black and pink stripes, and at the center there were two flickering sprites of what seemed to be bosses I guess that I couldn't quite recognize. I couldn't do anything on that screen, tried to press everything I could, and "start" was the last button I pressed; it brought me back to the first room of the area as if I had normally died, but the room was partially glitched and the game completely frozen, and I noticed that all my stats (level, exp and HP notably) got reset as if all my progress was lost. I then reset the game, selected "continue" and the game brought me back to Area 4 but all my progress was indeed gone, making it basically impossible to move on and eventually try to replicate whatever happened.

None of what I just described was recorded unfortunately.

If you guys have any idea as to what could have possibly happened, feel free to share it, otherwise thanks for reading if you've made it this far.

Thread: Felt like addressing a moderation/administration issue

Started by: Kat_kunoichiKat_kunoichi

Hi all,
Over the last weekend I found myself being unmodded from the Batman: The Video Game (NES) leaderboard; in that same time frame, junkyard_dave had to undergo a similar treatment, getting demoted from the status of “Super Moderator” to “Moderator”. Nobody ever warned us about it, nobody ever tried to reach out to us to communicate this decision, nobody ever expressed concerns in the way we managed runs verification or any other action relative to the moderation of that leaderboard.
After strenuously trying to gather information, reaching out to people close to us, forum posts and all, we managed to find out that that measure was taken after an unmentioned group of people reached out to the moderators of this website expressing complaints regarding a rule change based on an inside joke and alleged disrespectful messages associated to rejected runs, in the light of which one of those moderators thought that taking measures was a “necessary” act. The other two Super Moderators of that leaderboard were actually preemptively warned about this measure by garadas21, Content Moderator on this website, who was the same person who forwarded the complaint of that unmentioned group of people to Full Moderators and Admins; I'd like to point out how he could have reached out to me in several different ways if he had wanted to, as we also happen to share the same native language, avoiding the risk of information getting lost in translation.
Now, not only do I consider those accusations just not enough to demote Dave and axe me, and lead me to seriously question the good faith of the moderator(s) that acted on those accusations, but I also feel extremely concerned about it all, since the entire exchange of posts on this website between Dave and the Admin kirkq was deleted today, because moderators thought it would be better to solve stuff like this in private; the problem is that in this whole exchange of posts, never once were we ever redirected to the moderator who acted on those complaints or to the people that forwarded those same complaints, so even though I fully agree on solving these issues behind closed doors, both for a matter of practicality and for personal inclinations, I would still necessarily need to know who should I go talk to so that I could address these issues more properly. I personally dislike this “code of silence” kind of logic, as there should be no reason not to be transparent about this sort of thing, and it doesn't make me feel safe either, as it looks like partiality in moderators' judgement is an actual thing, which just shouldn't exist in this context, as we're here to speedrun videogames after all, not to appease personal frustrations and generate feuds.
I wrote this post to raise awareness, not to attack anyone, as it's not the first time within the retro community that people use their “power” or other people's power to harass and create unpleasant and uncomfortable situations; I hope for a greater transparency in the resolution of future issues like this one, I believe it's possible to make it happen.

Also, not sure if you guys are aware yet or if somebody pointed it out already, but, with the new OS, savestates are now working on Everdrive too, so that should make the process of practice much smoother for a few of us 😃

Hey! NES mini is generally treated as an emulator, so I would assume that you could run this game there no problem, since emulator runs are accepted here; I'd suggest you to join the Discord server if you have questions and in order to receive answers from people who are more knowledgeable than me about this game 😃

Yeah, the "automatically verify run" option totally defeats the purpose of what verifying a run is actually about.

If everyone agrees, I'll proceed removing all the "no video" runs from the leaderboard, as it's quite pointless to keep them there; plus, it could be an incentive for runners to get new PBs 😃

Hi. I talked to a few other members of the community lately, and we all think it would be a good idea to start requiring a video proof when submitting a run to this leaderboard, also as a consequence of the fact that submissions are now more frequent than they used to be, and new runners are taking an interest in this game, and I personally think if there's a chance to make things more legitimate, it's always wise to take it.
Do you guys think we could make this happen?

Thanks twin0, but yeah, I was referring to the Ninja Gaiden NES Discord server; Beerfull said he can't find it anymore either, so I'm guessing it just got deleted, which would be a shame, since it contained a lot of useful info.

Hello 😃

-Ohon's Low% run seems to be gone, there's no video anymore; could someone provide an active link or update his submission?
-Is the Ninja Gaiden Discord server still active? It looks like it suddenly disappeared for whatever reason, so if somebody knew something about it, I'd be curious to know what happened.

Thanks 🙂

It is definitely a case-by-case thing, I agree on that; anyway, I talked to another mod and a separate leaderboard was created super fast apparently: https://www.speedrun.com/tetris2_gb
Good luck on your future runs 😃

Personally, I'd feel like making this leaderboard NES-only; I took a look at the GB version of this game and even though the concept is definitely the same, timing-wise there seem to be some differences. I honestly don't know if there are actual criteria to decide when to include two different versions of a game on the same leaderboard, but again I'd lean towards requesting a dedicated leaderboard for the GB version of this game.
If other mods want to express their opinion too, I think we could discuss it, otherwise I'll just proceed and keep you updated. 🙂

Yeah, I think it's alright; maybe tick the box "Emulator" when you submit your run, since you're not playing on the actual, original Famicom. 🙂
