It's fine to just pause the game, we pause the game to switch FPS and so on. I would say if you need to have a break, don't be longer than 5 minutes. There are some ridiculous rules out there for other games were if you're paused or in a main menu for more than 10 seconds, run invalid!

Speedruns are done in single segment, meaning you gotta select new game or NG+ start from beginning to the end of the game. You cannot pause the game and select checkpoint during the run except if you encounter a glitch that stops progress. This is because of the bad optimization of the game. There are two glitches that can happen, one in CH7 where you can get stuck in place and unable to move. Somewhat rare but it can happen at the stairs just before CH7 skip. Another glitch which seems to have happened to only a number of people is in CH11 were the Gondola after the garage door segment does not spawn unless you checkpoint.

So yeah you need to do a run from start to finish, you can continue on if you die but no forced checkpoints.

PS3 and Xbox are awful ports.

In short, TEW originally was only gonna come out on PS3/XBOX but decided to bring it for next gen as well so they put less time into optimizing the PS3/XBOX ports. The loads are way worse.

PS4 or PC is what you want.

You don't need a timer, no. just post the final time at the end 🙂
