Good thing Emu is now separated. Now I don't have to fail at trying to emulate the exact limitations of this game on console.

My only concern, the ILs (Cross Town Checkpoint and such) should reflect the Full-Game Runs. Is there a way to make that happen, by separating the difference between console and emu?

So what's the trick? You mind telling us or showing a video of the trick alone?

No reason for people to hoard strats or anything.

Thread: Let's figure out how the NYM HC IGT timer works!

Started by: CJacobsSACJacobsSA

This is a great idea. I am all for dismantling everything and figuring out how the clock works to test its reliability. Currently I am working on projects related to other Max Payne games but I intend on turning my focus towards Max Payne 3 in the near future.

Keep us updated with what you find and let's keep this thread going.

Not a problem. I think I always kind of scoffed at this board and figured no one took the game seriously anyway. It was when I noticed that NYM Hardcore started to become quite active I realized that we needed to properly document the runs.

@bradrua: Do some testing, if you find some exploits that are worthwhile we can evaluate which version is faster and if it realistic to make a swap. Also, I agree with BigPapi in that the current game remains vastly unexplored as far as exploits go, so who knows what's really out there?

It is a staple in Max Payne that bullet time DOES affect the in-game timer.

For instance a Max Payne 1 Speedrun, NYM as a category only really exists because it requires different strats and making full use of bullet time. Essentially, the only reason to have separate categories for Story Mode and New York Minute is that one is measured in RTA and the other in IGT.

In Max Payne 2, NYM runs don't even exist because the player can manipulate the in-game timer to a point where a run might take hours upon hours, but the IGT will read 0:00:00.

Since no genuine abuse of the in-game timer has been used/discovered in determining the FINAL NYM time (at the end of Chapter 14) in Max Payne 3, the use of bullet time to slow down the in-game clock should be used as an opportunity to achieve better times in-game and not a hindrance. For those that want their run to be timed in RTA, Story Mode is measured in that method and might be a better option for you.

Unless an abusive trick is discovered to permanently alter/stop/slow the in-game clock is found, NYM will be timed using the In-Game timer.

Thread: Clarification for IL rules

Started by: JOEdrinksBEERJOEdrinksBEER

I am posting this in the event, no matter how improbable, someone comes along and wants to take a stab at the Individual Chapter runs. Here are some specifics for the current rules, in addition to rules already provided:

- All weapons / ammo / painkillers must be brought over from preceding levels.

This means that developer keys and cheats to give Max full arsenal with max ammo and painkillers is not allowed. The reason for this, is that specific weapons at specific chapters are not normally obtainable. (For instance, using a Sniper Rifle during Part 1 Chapter 1 - Roscoe St Station.) Even if a weapon is obtainable from a previous chapter, runners should not refill ammo prior to starting their attempts as well.

However,

it is acceptable to use developer keys/ cheats to refill Max's health and bullet time prior to starting your attempts.

Feel free to use this thread for Individual Chapter specific questions.

Thread: Golden Guns

Started by: BigPapiBigPapi

(edited: )

For now, Golden Guns will be allowed. Here's why:

1. A lot of the (higher difficulty) categories require at least one playthrough of the game to unlock corresponding difficulties. Assuming one has played through the game once, they have access to Chapter Select. By having access to Chapter Select, that person would have easy access to collecting the guns they are missing.

2. I am not going to make restrictive rules on other people because one person (or maybe a handful) don't want to take the time to play through levels to collect guns. Typically, speedrunning a game is going to require more than one play through by nature anyway.

3. All of the existing runs use golden guns.

I suppose it could be left up to a vote. On one side, the guns are easy to get (especially with a guide) and having them is the faster method. On the other side, it can be seen exclusively as NG+ content and thus unfair. Since the game allows you to easily toggle the Golden Gun effects off, I would say that this could easily go either way. Of course, establishing that rule would mean that just about every run on the board so far would be invalid.

However, NYM Hardcore is already a NG+ category so golden guns will always be allowed in that instance.

So let's vote:

A - Allow Golden Guns in Story Mode runs

B- Ban use of Golden Gun effects for Story Mode runs

As far as I know, the golden guns have no direct effect on the game other than the look of the guns and the ability to use the unlocked Infinite Ammo cheat from the Chapter Select. Also, New York Minute should remain timed by the in game clock so long as abhorrent abuses of the timer aren't used.

PlasmaSix: In your case you would want to run in Story Mode on your preferred difficulty. Of course, it is faster to skip cutscenes when available so it would be in your best interest to do so, since it is a speedrun after all.

Thread: Fixing this Board

Started by: JOEdrinksBEERJOEdrinksBEER

Hello. First off let me say that this board looks like a mess. I am proposing the following:

Move all existing categories into two categories:

Category Name: Story Mode
This is the category that is already represented on this leader board, however we should consolidate into one category and have the separate difficulties be variable inside of it. The name should either be Story Mode or Any% whichever is more agreeable. Still, the "%" should not follow the name of the difficulty, since the difference in difficulty does not demand a different %.

Category Name: New York Minute Hardcore
This second category will be exactly what the name implies. Starting from a fresh NYM Hardcore and completing all the way through with 0 deaths.

These proposed changes will not affect any previously submitted runs or rules, but rather give this leaderboard more structure. Post thoughts.

Thread: The White Shoe Slaying (5 Star Strategy)

Started by: JOEdrinksBEERJOEdrinksBEER

Actually, I stumbled across this just playing around casually. Finding this strat in particular actually started to make me question how minimal you can do the cases and still get the 5 star ranks.

Turns out, most of the 5 star guides online are insanely thorough to ensure players get the 5 star. As for right now, I am slowly making my way through the game to try to cut corners on a lot of the cases. Although I haven't done a great amount of routing for vice and arson cases, I may still record a 5 Star No Skip run to just get a baseline time up. Even though using skips is faster, which I am all for, I kind of like the challenge of having to do the driving (which is a primary reason people miss the 5 star rank on cases.)

The primary purpose of this strat is to skip the interview at Central Police Station with the sailor, James Jessop, and the entire trip to the Bus Station. I am not sure if this strat would be too viable in a category other than 5 Star because essentially what you are skipping altogether is:
-Going to Central for Jessop interview
-Conducting Jessop interview
-Going to Bus Depot
-Tracking down Bus 249 to speak with driver

During this entire sequence you grab 2 clues which are thought to be necessary for 5 star rank - the Bus Route Map and the updated 'Victim Last Seen' from the bus driver.

So the way it works is to visit the Hobo Camp BEFORE going to the Taraldson house at 43 Emerald St. The hobo you are looking for won't be around. Now, continue with the case as normal. After leaving the Taraldson residence, KGPL will notify you through the scanner that the hobo has been seen at the camp.

Continue on to Baron's Bar and do the chase scene with Richard Bates. After you catch him and do an interview - do NOT use any phone, this is the time you will be informed that Jessop is at Central Station. Instead, get into your police vehicle and Rusty will put out the APB on the taxi from there.

After speaking with the taxi driver continue to the Hobo Camp and confront Ackerman. Afterwards, return to Central and you can conduct the final interview with Ackerman and end the case. Even more interesting is that this interview will only have 2 questions instead of the normal 3 - Cole will not have the option to ask about Ackerman's alibi, but not getting this question does not affect 5 star ranking.

Following this the end Case Report will look like:
Clues: 17/17
Questions: 12/12
Case Notes: The bus driver who delivered Theresa to her death might have like a chance to testify.
Rating: 5 Stars

What's interesting about this is that you will have only picked up 15 clues following this route, but the game credits you for the clues you could not have possibly gotten from skipping the bus depot. Also, there are only 12 questions total because without Jessop's interview (4 questions total) and Ackerman's missing question of his alibi.

Now if you were to have Cole use a phone to put an APB out on the taxi, you would have been informed of Jessop waiting at the station, and neglecting him would net you a 4 star rating with the same case notes. However, through this route KGPL never gets the chance to notify you of this witness therefore allowing you to skip it entirely.

Adding to what Patrick posted, it's even better to stop at the bank before starting the second instance of The Getaway.

Pros:
-You could get some mafia guys killed during robbery so there are less people getting in and out of car.
-The bank alarm will be going off (I'm assuming until you save/load) so you can enjoy the sweet sounds every time you drive by it.

Yo just going to throw this idea out there, this seems like a good spot. Maybe we should make separate text channels for each of the games?

I'm not really sure if other users would want this but I know most of the time I check Discord maybe once a day quickly just to search for GTA3 related discussions. Sometimes, I don't bother because the amount of new messages of which there are 2-3 conversations going on at once about different strats from different games. This could also help people that are looking for quick answers to game specific strats and topics. Just a thought.

If the Discord is not active enough and people like having it consolidated, then that's cool too.
