Well, as the rules exist right now, you're absolutely allowed to downpatch and use any version you want, so your runs wouldn't "not count" if you downpatched. Although, I can understand that doing that can pose additional difficulty.

But... I can't think of an easy solution to this problem in this game (or for any game that gets frequent, major updates). Right now, all versions are permitted, which is the easiest way to moderate this game. Adding subcategories for each version is a no-go, and only allowing the current version would require huge leaderboard overhauls each time a new version is released... Maybe only allowing runs with version 1.0.0 or later would be an acceptable compromise?

EDIT: Just checked, not all of the Island Express runs are from 2015. There is one run from 2017, that is using a version with reentry heating. It might still be worth creating a separate category between the two, but there likely won't be as great a difference in time as you might be expecting.

Other items do affect the gameplay of the player, but they don't make the run faster. They make the run better, though, in my opinion, because they give you a way to mitigate and "fight back" against bad AI rng. You can use shells to hit poop piles or other shells used by the AI, and you can use poop piles to get rid of an AI that's riding your tail. Banning all items, while it does mean you don't need a paw or a cheese to get a good time, it also means you're at the mercy of the AI's rng.

Actually, I'm half-tempted to remove the "1 lap" IL category and replace it with an itemless category (Er, a "No Paw/Cheese" category). There's already messiness with 1 lap, and I'm not sure anyone cares about 1 lap, so replacing 1 lap's messiness with some No Paw/Cheese messiness would probably be an overall improvement to the leaderboards.

I know that the "World Record History" charts are still "under construction" in the new layout - but, when they get finished, I feel like an option to look at a table or a list instead of a chart would be helpful. Lots of games have long histories with huge numbers of world records, and with the old charts it was often a nightmare trying to figure out the exact progression because two (or more) points on the chart would be absurdly close together and it'd be impossible to figure out which point your mouse was hovering over.

(Posted this same response in the Discord server):
I actually have considered in the past adding an "itemless" category, and I probably would have already except that I can't think of an easy, elegant way to actually add that to the leaderboards.

The easiest way would be to just add a broad Itemless category/subcategory applicable to all levels, but that would leave you with 7 additional "N/A" categories (The labyrinths, the Bonus levels, and WLP) because you can't use items in those, which just makes the leaderboards look messy.

The alternative is adding an Itemless subcategory individually to each level that is made faster with items - which means manually adding 21 different subcategories. That would be the most elegant solution, but it would take forever to set up.

So, I'm not sure about the best way to approach the issue.

"All World-Firsts" sounds like it could be an interesting category, although I'm not personally familiar with all of the "world-firsts" so verification might take a bit longer than with some of the other categories. If someone does a run of it and posts the video of it here, I can add the category to the leaderboards.

And since nobody has done any 100% runs, I could certainly add "all world firsts" to the list of requirements if people seem agreeable to it.

Thread: Are pre-made ships allowed?

Started by: JonnyOThanJonnyOThan

I haven't contacted either of the other mods about this, but my current opinion is that premade ships are fine. As far as I'm aware, premade ships are only available in Sandbox mode, and time spent constructing ships isn't counted in Sandbox mode anyways. Plus, I'm doubtful that any premade ship is the optimal ship for any category.

If I'm wrong and premade ships are available in Science and Career mode, then my opinion is to disallow them in Science and Career but to allow them in Sandbox.

I feel like a "DLC" variable might be better than entirely separate leaderboards; it's unlikely that anything in MH will significantly change the times in any category, if at all. Plus, this game already has a huge number of categories, and the last thing it needs is even more.

@DoublUp I'm not really in need of another mod right now, as this game is kind of dead right now anyways.

Oh, also, I think in Water Lily Party, skip #4 that I mentioned above might have been patched. So, I'm not entirely sure what to do with the leaderboards about that. I might make a "legacy" subcategory for WLP 1lap, or if its possible to downpatch on the Steam version I might just leave it as it is. But, I'm going to do some more investigation before I change up the leaderboards.

Ooh, very nice! Although, I probably won't add a "skips" subcategory for Poppyto Park (for the time being), because it looks like it probably barely saves any time in 1lap, and I think using a rainbow paw over the lake would still be faster in 5lap. Nice find nonetheless!

Thread: Major Leaderboard Overhaul

Started by: IanwubbyIanwubby

As of 2019-04-16, a couple major changes have been made to the structure and function of the leaderboard:

1) Runs on Version 0.0.1.1 of the game have been placed into a category separate from runs on Versions 0.2+.

2) The In-Game Time now has priority over the Real Time. That being said, the Real Time will still be listed for the full-game runs (or at least for the time being).

3) The Real Time column has been removed from the Individual Level leaderboards.

Granted, there's probably not many people looking at this page much anymore, but figured I'd announce it all officially in case anyone got confused by the changes.

Perhaps a way to have a custom number of decimal places in the time, as opposed to only 3 decimal places? 3 decimal places is certainly enough for almost any game; however, 2 decimal places is also enough for any game that runs at or below 100 frames per second, which is most games, and some games are timed with an in-game timer only accurate to the tenth of a second. While of course you can still use these timing methods with 3 available decimal places, it can somewhat clutter the leaderboards of games that aren't timed with that level of precision (with the extra 0 at the end of every time). So, by allowing custom levels of decimal precision, leaderboards can be as precise as they need to be without any redundant zeroes at the end of every listed time.

Sorry for the delay (again), but it's a category now (the Inbounds subcategory) @SomeWeirdDude

Went ahead and added your run to the leaderboards, you might want to make sure your camera focuses on the screen before ending the recording in the future though 😉

Driving into the poop pile (the brown triangle) immediately forces you to an extremely slow speed... it would be faster to just drive through the finish line normally, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're proposing.

@SomeWeirdDude (also sorry for the late response) I'm not sure if "glitches" would be the right word for that, but if I understand what you mean, I suppose that could be an interesting run. If you wouldn't mind, it'd be helpful if you could do a run of that and post it here, just to see if it'd be different enough to warrant a separate category.

1-7. Labyrinth 01:
You can trigger the finish line by passing it on the opposite side of the wall, saves maybe 5 seconds? (I haven't timed it) This is the only known skip in World 1.

3-2. Square Island:
You can use a bounce pad to fly out of bounds and will be placed back inside the map past several obstacles, saving ~5 seconds per lap.
You can also use a cheese right before using the bounce pad, which lets you fly even further, saving a total of ~13 seconds per lap. Both skips are shown in the video.

3-6. Bunny Hopping:
You can use a bounce pad to jump over a wall and skip a portion of the track, saving ~5 seconds per lap.

4-1. The Snail's Island:
You can use a bounce pad to jump over a wall and skip a tiny portion of the track, saving 1 or 2 seconds per lap.

5-1. Water Lily Party (this is where the fun begins):
Skip #1: You can immediately drive off of the track, making sure your right wheel passes over the bounce pad in front of the starting line, and you will be picked up and placed more than halfway through the track for some reason, improving the lap time from ~28 seconds to ~13 seconds
Skip #2: You can use the bounce pad in front of the finish line to immediately hop over an invisible wall and on to the very end of the track, making for a ~7 second lap
Skip #3: This one is extremely precise, it's possible to do skip #2 and miss the track, but still be picked up and put down at the end of the track. This makes for a ~10 second lap. Skip #2 is faster and easier, so you should never intentionally attempt this skip
These 3 skips are all in this video

Skip #4: If you're at the very end of the lap, you can drive off the edge of the track and towards the finish line, and it will count as a completed lap. This saves 2 or 3 seconds on an individual lap, but it loses time overall because you'll be picked up and placed further back on the track than you usually would. It would save time if you did it on lap 5, but doing it on lap 5 triggers an infinite lap glitch, meaning the race will never end. Combining this with skip #2 can make for a ~4 second lap

Skip #5: I'm honestly not entirely sure what the cause of this one is, and I've only encountered it once, but I believe what happened is I fell off the track and was placed back on top of the finish line, and at the same time an AI drove under me and pushed me backwards in midair so that I was behind the finish line, allowing me to then drive forward and immediately finish the lap. This could potentially make for the fastest possible lap, but taking advantage of the AI is very difficult to do
