Forum: Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers

Thread: What's the best version for speedrunning?

The PS1 and N64 version differ so much that they are considered entirely different games, so beware of that.

That being said, the PS1 version is faster to speedrun than N64.

Have you tried to use our patcher on your PC game? Maybe it helps with the crashes

I don't have a save file to be able to time this sadly, but from rough timing it seems to be very close, with pumpkin skip being slightly faster than the platform skip. However, if you optimize this movement a little bit more it may turn out to be faster (PC has different cycles here so cant test it on there)

Edit: forgot I can cheat to access all levels on emu, seems pumpkin skip is indeed about 0.5s faster than platform skip

he has the most cost efficient partner with 2 attack for dual maps with Goomba. Yoshi is the 2nd best character to pick, as he has boo who also has 2 attack, but costs 3 coins per turn instead of the 2 that Goomba costs. Using any other character is gonna slow you down significantly,

Don't think removing it is the right option, I'd rather just leave it there in case it ever gets fixed. Sucks though

You're right in the sense that it isn't clearly defined in the rules. The thing is, when All Maps started being ran some months ago with a big race, everyone was starting from a NG+ file and was skipping cutscenes, so I didn't even know that you couldn't skip them when starting from a fresh file.

As for what to do now, I think it's fair to just be in one line with Mario Party 3, in which NG+ is allowed to skip cutscenes. I don't see any reason to not allow it here, especially since deleting your saves over and over again makes running Mini-Game Coaster a hell.

Unfortunately I can't subtract time from your RTA run, if you want to beat Simon you'll have to do another run.

I will clearly put in the rules that NG+ is allowed from now on.

Valid point, and I'm of course not stating that those 3 minutes aren't a significant timesave, especially for a top time (or even a mediocre time for that matter). It's how that timesave is realized that should decide whether it should be a speratae category or not.

''In my opinion, for a high level runner who is looking for every opportunity to shave a few seconds off of their run and will put in hours of work to do that, three minutes is definitely significant.''

Yes. But you need to look at the differences between the runs, not only the time it saves. 3 minutes in a 2:30 run is 2% of the run. For a top runner this will be a lot, yes. But on the run ITSELF it isn't.

This is however, for me, not even the main reason for opposing a split. It's the extent to which a runs changes by looks/route/tricks etc. which should decide if said split would be appropriate. since 2P barely changes the run, it should not be a separate category.

''The whole point of a category is to compare your times to people who are doing the same thing as you. If this were not the case, categories like Any% no OoB would be completely useless.''

Agreed. In most games though OoB changes the run in a significant way and save a large portion of time over their no OoB counterparts. I wouldn't call 3 minutes in a 2:30 run a significant amount of time.

Look for example at http://www.speedrun.com/som , the first speedgame that came to my mind that also uses 2 controllers vs 1 controller. See how the categories are split. It's because 2C there changes the whole run, saving 1/3rd of its 1C counterpart. Now that would be enough reason to split 1P and 2P yes. The argument as it stands, is not.

''It's also like the way that top SM64 runners use N64 even though VC is faster.''

No it's not. You're comparing apples to oranges. VC is faster because of lag reduction (by the system itself). 2P is faster because of execution (by the player).

''others chose to run 1P and don't even wish to compare themselves to 2P, not as an excuse to be lazy and do slow strats, but because they wish to run a separate category.''

https://gyazo.com/af653aff9f5cef912695edef91d5cf92

Also note that Neg's 1P run is in there. So running both and comparing to only the applicable ''category'' is totally doable, it just takes 2 mouse clicks. Its just your fastest overall time that stays on the combined leaderboards, as it should be

Don't split em, it makes no sense to separate the two IMO, in agreement with aforementioned reasons.

''A good comparison may be to Hoverless and normal any% in SMS''

No. Hoverless is a challenge, restricting players to not use a vital element of a regular playthrough and/or speedrun. The slower run in that case is actually the more challenging (speaking for an average runner).

In SMG its the opposite case. 2P adds something that the average speedrunner doesn't use, because of reasons. For me personally it was just the discomfort of running it that way. I however accept that I make use of a slower method which takes less effort, and therefore accept that my times will be slower than people who use that faster method.

Having 2P runner's times on a separate leaderboard will totally disregard their actual effort into learning the 2P strats (however little time it may take them it still takes time) vs the less effort it takes to run 1P. Not to mention that it would look like some sort of meme category, with only a couple of runs on the LB. It'd be very demotivating for an aspiring runner to run 2P when you can only compare to (compete with) a couple of people vs the dozens of people on the 1P LB

If you'd like to compare to only 1P runs there's the nice drop-down box that sr.com has implemented for exactly that reason.

Edit: Also very much what frogy said in the post above me.

Yes, as long as you start from a fresh file (please include resetting the save file or being level 1 in the video)

The only difference is in Campaign you start from a fresh save file (New Game/level 1). Within that save file you can buy/upgrade anything you like between the first and last mission. In NG+ you can have premade classes and everything upgraded with being level 20 before you start the first mission.
