Thread: Remove thousandths of a second in secret ending

Started by: misterLO472misterLO472

As long as there's a specifically defined beginning and end frame for timing rules, I see no benefit to removing milliseconds from the times. While it might grant people ties in the top 3 positions, I feel that it would remove the competition incentive to push the game any further, especially if a full second's worth of time-saving strategies are not available. The only reason that my run happened and shaved two frames or so off of the previous record of two years was that I believed it could be done and I wanted to break such an old record. Some runners may be attracted to the idea of a tied world record, but pushing the run below 10:28 is a challenge and then some in a category that has only had eight runners in two years. On top of that, these times have already been settled and I believe removing milliseconds would unnecessarily kick up dust and shake up the leaderboard in a way that doesn't add any benefit to the playerbase.

Edit: I should probably learn how to read better. If the removal is only for the thousandths place, I'm again unsure that there's any benefit to removing the tracking of .00x of a second, as it seems like it just creates unnecessary work editing runs that already have that exact time figured out for them to all read .xx0 anyway, since I don't believe the site lets you drop the thousandths place digit.

Hey y'all. I've got an unfortunate addendum to add here. I discussed with a Full Mod of the site regarding clarification of the rules and the conclusion is that I am unable to host any of the game's files here, fan-modded or otherwise. Any previous discussion regarding those files has been/will be edited or posts removed. All links to potentially infringing content will also be removed. I apologise for any inconvenience as a result, but the site has a vested interest in avoiding legal trouble of that sort and I cannot blame them for that. An unfortunate side effect of this is that Grassy Knoll will be more inconvenient to run if not outright removed as a result of this situation. I will be looking for another solution that could allow this category to exist without requiring violation of site rules but for now, you will have to rely on sources that cannot be hosted or linked to here.

Additionally, posts may be removed for better cohesion as there are a lot of holes from accounts being deleted and other issues in this thread.

Edit: A guide has been posted that instructs you on how to modify your game files to be able to run Grassy Knoll. I've been informed by the same Full Mod that this is an acceptable alternative to hosting files.

Edit 2: As another addendum, I'm sorry to announce that the Discord server previously discussed will no longer be open. It has seen very little use since it opened and I believe that this forum has already been proven to facilitate the kind of community discourse that a Discord server is usually intended for. The completion of Speedrun.com's own direct message system also means that runners and moderators can be reached out to very easily without an external service.

Apologies for that, bit of an unexpected growing pain. I'll take a look at the run and rectify that issue within the next couple of days.

Alrighty everyone, it's been a few days and I feel it's time to implement changes to keep the leaderboard moving and lively.

-Categories

As previously mentioned, I intend to add the three most voted for categories, so we will now have Jackie's Hat% (or just Hat% depending on what sounds nicer to the community), Grassy Knoll% and 3 Shots%!

-Timing Rules

I'm moving full steam ahead with my intentions to start time when "Play" is pressed and to end it when the last shot is fired. These should allow anyone using RTA timing like LiveSplit to have a good picture of what their time is without having to analyse frames while also allowing me to correct any significant discrepancies. For example, time for 3 Shots% would start on clicking "Play" and end when the third shot is fired. As long as you have completed the objectives of the category, you have a completed run!

I had intentions to change Kill JFK to "Any%," but this doesn't appear to be supported by the community as there are a few of us who didn't like when interpretations of the rules allowed time to end on shooting JFK's limo driver instead of JFK himself. As a result, Kill JFK will be disambiguated to end when JFK is killed directly by the shot the player fires and not any secondary causes.

If anyone wants an Any% where anything goes, let me know!

-Moderators/Verifiers

It appears that no one had any opinions regarding who to make a secondary moderator, so I will remain alone in this role for the time being.

-Discord Server

I will soon be putting together a server for the game to facilitate quick discussion in case situations like our recent issues happen again, as well as to have an atmosphere where we're easily approachable.

Buckethead and I have discussed it and we've implemented a category for parties with 5 or more players. Feel free to submit your run. If you have any other perspectives of it, please do include them in the description.

For timing, I figured that time would end when the last shot is fired to complete the last objective (e.g. the shot that kills JFK, or the shot that takes Jackie's hat off). I think Winter made a post explaining 3 Shots% a couple of years ago that you can find on the forum and I believe I referenced it in the original post for this thread. If it's of any consolation, I personally liked Speaker of the House% in my play-testing but I think that I'm going to incorporate the three most voted for categories and add them in a day or two when it seems that everyone who's interested in running the game has voted as long as there's no significant dissent against that.

That's a good concern to have. I will say though that I checked the result in question and it looks more like an unfortunate coincidence, since no one ever replied to that thread. It should go without saying that behaviour like that is unacceptable on this leaderboard. We're here for the meme of the game, not to espouse hatred.

I became mod about a day ago after the old mod removed himself and left it up to one of us to get the role and look after the game.

In that case, here's a poll! https://www.strawpoll.me/18065483/

Hopefully this will offer a good amount of clarity for what we wanna play going forward.

I was gonna suggest that, but we have a lot of other categories to gauge interest for first. I might make a strawpoll and give it a few days.

Personally, I wasn't very happy when I saw that the rules were twisted, but I eventually admired it since it was innovative. As with everything in this post though, it's the community's choice as to how timing for Kill JFK will end. I believe that modifying the rules to specify that the shot should kill JFK would be the simplest solution. Otherwise, I think that time should end when JFK is killed, however the player intends to do that. That has the issue of being a bit difficult to pin down, but I think the animations can be followed so that we can pinpoint their first frames.

Hey there everyone! Finally the time is upon us to collect our thoughts and make changes to the game.

Timing:

A lot of the recent issues surrounding this game have been due to the inconsistencies and difficulties with timing. The current rules dictate that timing starts on the first frame of the fade-in, but I found in my testing that this was not accurately enforced and can be manipulated by brightness changes in editing software.

I propose changing timing to start on clicking "Play" as a much more consistent starting point. While itself not necessarily perfect, it removes the confusion that got us in this position to begin with. Further testing is required to see if there is consistency in the amount of time that passes when you skip the text intro sequence, but this can be done. There is an unfortunate unforeseen consequence and that is that this change will invalidate @LHO1963LHO1963 's current world record. I don't enjoy stepping on toes, so if perhaps footage can be presented including a "start" press or a new run with it can be posted, this would solve that issue.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to them.

New categories:

There have been a lot of suggested categories over the years for the game and we should see who would be interested in running them so that they don't start off empty.

@SadSixersFanSadSixersFan suggested:
-Grassy Knoll%, where using a modified game file you can shoot from the grassy knoll.
-Speaker of the House%, where as he put best, "you have to kill JFK and LBJ." If SadSixersFan is willing, please do post a video explaining the category.

@madnessHankmadnessHank suggested:
-(tentatively named) Jackie's Hat%, where you just shoot her hat off. Simple enough.
-(also tentatively named) Police Helmet%, where you would do the same thing but with every police officer in the game. I don't know if you have enough time to shoot every officer's helmet off before the game ends and takes you to the replay screen, but I'm not opposed to researching this for the sake of variety.

Winter.ExEzPz suggested:
-3 Shots%, where you fire three shots that realistically follow everything that happened with Oswald's shots except for the timing, which would be faster since we're speedrunning. It seems a bit tedious and nuanced compared to the other categories, but it's an interesting concept.

On top of those, I would appreciate some input on the state of Any% (Kill JFK), where the rules have been interpreted such that you can kill JFK by instead killing the driver of his car. This stops the timer at the shot being fired, but it doesn't result in the death of JFK until a second or two later. While this did innovate on the category, I'm not sure it holds true to the original point. Time could be changed to end when JFK is considered dead, or Any% can remain the same. Any opinions on this are welcome.

Here's a poll if you want a simpler way to share which categories you're interested in running: https://www.strawpoll.me/18065483/

Moderators/Verifiers:

While the game doesn't have a ton of traffic, I believe a second moderator would be helpful for double-checking any potential mistakes and keeping the leaderboard as fair as possible. If there are any opinions as to who that should be, feel free to present that option. This also goes for anyone that would make a good verifier.

Discord server:

If it's the preference of the community, we can create a Discord server specifically as opposed to relying purely on the game's SRC forum.

Lastly, I feel I should mention that these decisions are for the entire community to make. Sound off on as many things as you have opinions for and I'll do my best.

If I've missed anything or you have any additional thoughts for the leaderboard, please do make a post.

Hello there! Recently after quite a few efforts to implement changes on the leaderboard for JFK: Reloaded ( https://www.speedrun.com/jfkreloaded ), the only moderator removed himself without adding anyone in his place. I'd like to be added to fill this gap.

Personally, I'd prefer that we could work things out with Derpeth. However I will mention that I asked Derpeth once every few weeks on other platforms if any of the mentioned changes were going to happen and I never got a reply. The only thing I've heard is related to retiming runs and even that was over a month ago now. If anyone else is willing to ask him on other platforms if he intends to institute any changes, I'd recommend it. If that doesn't create any meaningful information or changes, the site does have a thread for last resort situations where moderator roles can be given by site staff.

https://www.speedrun.com/The_Site/thread/63nr7

That all being said, this is a meme game and I believe currently this is the most traffic the game has seen in that context. It doesn't surprise me that something like this would be a lower priority but it is a bit of a shame given that there are interesting ideas and potential that's being squandered. At the very least I wanna know what's taking so long. Hopefully we can come out of this with a better mod staff.

Thread: What's up with how runs are timed?

Started by: DweatherDweather

Maybe I have no idea what I'm doing, but based on what the rules say, there are a lot of inaccuracies with times on the leaderboard compared to timing against their video files. Am I missing something?
