Thread: Grappling Issues

Started by: DefinitelyTravDefinitelyTrav

I figured I'd ask here since finding information elsewhere is likely to be a huge pain in the ass. Playing Galidor I've found the grapple to be near impossible to use consistently. I can't get it to swing very much and sometimes any momentum cancels when I let go of the grapple anyway.

You can watch me suffer here:

I've watched MyTMorty's run of the same part of the level above and it looks way more like what a grappling ability should look like. So I'd like to know what causes the grapple to misbehave like this and what the fix is. I know this is a speedrunning forum not a troubleshooting one, but with my game running as it is I have no hope of even attempting a speedrun (unless I can somehow master the insane speed I can get from my glitchy grapple). I'm on Windows 10 and have tried different compatibility settings with little to no change to the grapple though sometimes the blaster stops working with these different settings.

Any insight anyone could provide would be welcome as I'd really like to play this game as intended and speedrun it at some point. Thank you!

I imagine some already know about it, but if you run at an object you can interact with your hand and interact with it as you collide with it, you can clip through it. Not sure if it's actually useful though outside of not having to break down locked metal doors.

Parkour Races are the only thing from this game that could be considered an individual level run (IL). Leaderboards for ILs will not be kept here as they are automatically submitted to a Steam leaderboard.

For all gold feathers I just need to know how many feathers their are. Not sure if he added more or not.

The full release of A Short Hike was today (dubbed the Extra Mile) and it's going to shake things up as far as how runs are categorized. For the time being, I've removed the 100% and All Gold Feathers categories until we can determine new rules. Thankfully, I think Any% and Featherless will be unaffected because there don't seem to be any changes that affect the current route nor anything, at first glance, that could improve the route that you can't do in the Humble Monthly version.

I think going forward we should refer to the Humble Monthly version as "A Short Hike" and the Steam/Itch version as "A Short Hike: The Extra Mile." Or we could also refer to them as pre-release and release.

I don't really think we should do separate leaderboards for the two versions since they're so similar and not a lot of people run this game anyway.

Let me know if you have any thoughts!

It was part of the Humble Monthly bundle for April. I would guess the game will release on Steam and Itch.io sometime in May.

I believe IGT should be used once it's accuracy is confirmed. I agree with 6oliath that it should not be required to show a timer on screen should RTA be used for timing. It's a ridiculous idea to rely on a manually started/stopped third-party timer for the times that show up on the leaderboard as they should be timed by the difference between the start and end point of the video or re-timed by the one verifying it.

Since you can do split-screen co-op but without an actual partner, it might be a good idea to add a one player two controllers category (1p2c). Idk if it could make the game that much faster but it might be an interesting enough category that people would be interested in.

I believe the monster part doesn't matter and that it's more about how many of the main ingredient you use. I don't think there's any reason to ever use more than one monster part. But the best way to find that out is to experiment if you don't want to use a guide.

Ingredients typically have adjectives which could give you an idea of their effect. The hearty radish for instance boosts your health when cooked. Spices typically augment the effects of the main ingredient. Using hylian herbs for instant make a hearty radish dish restore more, all or even extra hearts. When it comes to elixirs, I didn't make many casually, but I assume you can extrapolate the same way. You need your main ingredient for the boost it gives you and then the monster part for the elixir.

Nintendo wants you to extrapolate from incomplete data so making food is fun. However, if you want to speedrun you should use a guide. If you don't want to speedrun, why are you one speedrun.com.

I wouldn't call this skip major, but I think it's possible it could be used elsewhere. I just haven't had the time to try anything else with it.

I had a crash after retrieving the stone of agony for the second time and entering the pause screen. Not sure if the stone of agony was the cause but it was the last item i had received before the crash,

I imagine it merely sets a value to true. The value can likely only be changed to true by activating it at the pedestal. I find it highly unlikely to be able to alter the value in-game without using cheats that directly alter code. Maybe it's possible if you can message with the memory but that's a big if.

Is it possible for someone to upload a 100% completed file? That would be a huge help for people wanting to get in the Any% NG+ category.

Thread: Questions About Individual Level Runs

Started by: TriforceOfWoopTriforceOfWoop

Looks to me like the timer starts upon control when fighting your way into the Divine Beast. Makes sense cause that is an intrinsic part of the Divine Beast. When all else fails follow the lead of already approved runs. Also it's best to start the timer too early than too late, though you don't even really need a timer.

In terms of submitting a run to a category with no other runs, yes you will technically have the world record for that level according to speedrun.com but this site doesn't encapsulate anything. Also, just because you finish a run, if it's a poor run you shouldn't be content with it. World record or not, if a time can be improved your goal should be to improve it, though that's also dependent on the value you put on speedrunning.
