I agree with this except only Chip runs should count. 😛

I say absolutely, let’s do it. Are there any points in the game where you need to use tail? I honestly can’t remember.

Thread: Category for normal and hard difficulty

There’s no difference in the categories when the top strats are being used, so we collectively decided that separate normal and difficult categories aren’t useful.
We had them as separate categories for a number of years.
It doesn’t make much sense to add a category for the purpose of using slower strats.
However, if you wanna try a fun secondary category, I recommend the bad ending. It’s a lot more involved in what you need to consider to complete the run.

Tootoo is correct. It’s the lateral movement that will cause you to take hits from the bosses. You can really take advantage of this, and sometimes seemingly move through the hitbox as long as you’re pogoing in a directly upward trajectory.

That’s fine. It would be preferred to broadcast your attempt if possible.

I’ve added the Any% PAL category in the miscellaneous section. Please resubmit your PBs to that category, Rudi. I will likely update the rules for better clarity. (I did it with my cellphone).

You can get through the wall, but the bottom section does not load until you have the key. Nudua TASed it a couple of years ago.

That’s a good point. Would you be open to it if there was any new speed tech to show off, or if someone fully optimized it as a miscellaneous category?

While I wouldn’t have have combined the easy and difficult categories myself, for the same reasons you mentioned, I don’t think a PAL any% is comparative to the other unpopular runs. The reason being that they show off parts of the game and speed tech that’s not present in the any% category. So they do have a practical function outside of the popularity of the run.

I don’t like the idea of having PAL runs alongside NTSC runs, because they differ so greatly. I would be willing to tip my hat as a long-time DT runner to a miscellaneous PAL category, if at least a couple of people showed interest, or at the very least, one person optimized the route.

When I added the bad ending and pacifist runs, I spent a lot of time optimizing the routes to further legitimize their presence on the leaderboards.

I hope a couple other mods will chime in on this subject so we can delve a little deeper into this discussion.

Hehe Yeah, you can jump that gap without the heli skip. When Purjo first started running DT, he didn’t know about PAL differences. I like to give him a hard time about that every so often. 😛
I don’t know exactly how they differ, but PAL runs slower, so even though the heli skip is not necessary, you lose quite a bit of time in general movement.

Perhaps if you can get a couple of guys to optimize that version, you may be able to make a better case for it.

PAL would be much slower, even much slower than emulator, and your run would probably be the only one. We’ll see what everyone else says, but I would recommend acquiring a NA version or simply running it on emu. (Hemmy has second place on emu, and he’s European; also Endy is European as well, but has a NA version for console).

Please don’t be discouraged. We have a good community of retro guys who will root you on and help you in any way possible.

That’s a very cool find! Nice job guys. Sounds cool to me. I don’t think it will be a bother in the misc categories, especially since it brings something new to the table for DT.

Repro should be essentially the same thing as the original, or at worst, it’s emulated. All my runs are emulated. I will accept all runs personally, unless I see something out of the ordinary that can’t be explained through normal gameplay.

Check out InfestedRiche's run. It's pretty incredible and you can see, what I assume, is what you're describing. Lots of wall jumps and block jumps.

That's a fair point. If one were to optimize a damageless run, you might be able to convince them to add it to the miscellaneous categories.

They just want to keep a clean leaderboard that doesn't have a bunch of ridiculous inoptimized categories.

For some examples: They discussed at one point getting rid of the "normal" difficulty category since there are no realistic differences from the "difficult" category. I routed easy and difficult "pacifist" runs and they gave me the option to choose between the two, and I went with easy since it's faster.

The other miscellaneous categories provide gameplay and/or tricks that you would not otherwise see, and I spent a lot of time making sure the routes were reasonably optimized in order to legitimize the categories.

So, I would say that if a category does not offer some sort of addition that doesn't exist within the other categories, besides the goal being different, you might have trouble getting them to add it.

With that being said, going ahead and routing it is both fun and rewarding. You never know whether or not it will gain steam.

Thread: no skips category

Started by: slumingsluming

If you want to enjoy a more thorough category, I recommend "good ending".
The route I used gives the viewer a much bigger view of the total map, and intended game options, like the mini games, and "hidden" map areas.
A glitchless category would only be different in the moon stage, and would be boring for most. It would add about a minute to the time.
I had a lot of fun routing and running "bad ending" and "pacifist" as well. I'm pretty much all by my lonesome in the miscellaneous categories, and would love to see someone attempt them.
A 100% category would be difficult to quantify. You could make it all treasures, or something along those lines. To be honest, no categories besides any% have ever garnered any interest. But don't let that stop you. Routing categories is fun even if it doesn't make the leaderboards.
