Please try to use an emulator that is close to the performance the game would have had on some contemporary real hardware. Mini vMac running at 1x seems pretty close.("Mini vMac estimates execution time using a table of average number of cycles for each of the 65536 primary opcodes.") Timing is RTA from the frame when you click to confirm character creation to the frame where the victory condition appears. Wikipedia claims that both versions of The Dungeon of Doom are identical in terms of gameplay, so I've lumped them into a single version. If there are actually relevant timing differences, they could be split apart. |

> You would also annoy a LOT of users who are living in countries with dynamic IP allocations like Germany (you automatically receive a new IP address every 24 hours). I was trying to specifically avoid that problem by indicating that it would only apply when a new session was created from a new IP, not when an existing session changed IPs. If you are repeatedly logging out and back in, then yes, but that applies to all such options. > You'll end up with the same insecure scenario regarding bruteforced/leaked email accounts as it already was without it. Possible in some cases, but that's far from a given. Email is the most valuable account that almost any users has, and is one of the most likely to be secure. Most major email providers provide some amount of additional security these days, particularly when they detect uncommon login patterns. Ratcheting up to the level of users' email security would be a solid improvement. We don't need to let perfect be the enemy of the good, but it looks like the admins already have a good plan so I'll stop spamming this thread. |

@PresJPolk They are not "phony", they provide different levels of security. If you have Google's threat model, where you need to actively defend against technologically sophisticated militarizes with billions of dollars to spend attacking you, then you certainly want to mandate a Yubikey or other tamper-resistant signature mechanism. The vandalism on Speedrun.com is about as far from that as you can get: zero-effort non-interactive password reuse. SMS hijacking may be relatively easy for a determined attacker, but even that is several levels above anything we've seen. Calling it a "phony" defense is unhelpfully reductionist. (Not that I actually disagree about the backups/rollbacks -- that's definitely critical stuff. I just get nitpicky about broad security claims.) |

If full 2FA is too much of a pain (requiring users to install a new application or give a phone number), an easier alternative might be requiring email confirmation the first time a moderator logs in (starts a new session) from a new IP. Not quite as secure, but perhaps sufficient. |

For the record, I posted another set of bounties on Reddit in October 2018: https://old.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/9kcyv4/bounties_for_new_warcraft_2_world_records_10_150/e6y7q2b/ I don't intend to post any more bounties for this game in the future. |

The time for the run https://www.speedrun.com/Overwatch/run/y6796x0m appears to have been typoed. The in-game time visible in the video, and included in its YouTube title, is 5:21. As a sanity-check, I measured its real time: 5:57.825. However, the time listed here entered here was 3:21 (better than the theoretical best time). EDIT: That's supposed to be "mis-timed", not "mix-timed". |
Forum: The Site Thread: High Scores - what shall we do? Started by: PacPac (edited: ) |
Add it to speedrun.com, as a new category like game runs vs levels runs, just add a few minor options to help users experience the parts of the site they care about. For example, options to default to score or speed runs when clicking into a game (if it has both), options for what to include in their homepage feed and notifications, and options for what to display by default in their profile. Users who are only interested in speedrunning only need to see that part of the site, but everything is kept closely-integrated for when it makes sense. I fear complexity as much as the next developer/designer, but hopefully this can serve these different use cases while remaining relatively simple. |

Forum: Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness Thread: Potential Rules Started by: |
I'm going to add the following rules text for Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal, based on these discussions and the set of runs we now have. Please let me know here or on Discord if you have any concerns and I'll be happy to discuss and make changes. --- Runs are measured in real time from the last frame before the (first) level appears, to the first frame after the (last) victory message appears. For Individual Level runs, this defines an upper bound on the duration the player had control. For Full Game runs, this includes loading times between levels. The "tigerlily" cheat code may be used to jump to a level to start an Individual Level run, but no cheat codes may be used during a run. You are not allowed to save and reload during Individual Level runs, but you are allowed to save and reload during Full Game runs. You may play at any speed, and you may change the game speed in the middle of a run. Runs are measured in seconds, not milliseconds, because victory conditions seem to be checked less often than once per second, even on Fastest speed. If Fog of War is disabled at any time during the run, the "Fog Disabled" option must be selected. The repackaged PC Battle.net Edition client "War2Combat" is allowed. |

This contest is now closed, and the leaderboards look so much better. ? Thanks to everybody who contributed runs. @ZPR wins 200 USD for setting or tying the best time for every individual level! (We imported a few faster old level runs from @Stu, but those are excluded for the purpose of this contest.) @RPGodfather wins 100 USD for setting our first single-segment full campaign run (50 USD), which included the first full human campaign run (25 USD), and for tying ZPR's ILs times for Orc 1, Orc 2, Orc 6, Human 1, and Human 2 (5 USD each). Prizes will be sent sent within 14 days. (edit: They were sent on April 8th.) (Note: in the case of ties in the future, prizes might only be awarded to the first person to set the tied score. Don't take this as a contrary precedent.) |

I've added "Fog of War" (Enabled/Disabled) as an optional field on all runs. It probably doesn't need to be a separate category at this point. |

@ZPR observed that the game only seems to check objectives every ~2.6s. This suggests that including milliseconds would be silly, since all times would be fall on one of these intervals if timed correctly. Although this assumes the game is consistently played at maximum speed, which is apparently not always true. Some other links: |
