Thread: [Tutorial] Prepare everything for your suitcase

Started by: BaffanBaffan

Thanks, I edited my post and the document, and I corrected this as well 😉

This is not an exhaustive list, but it should give you the main ideas.

I know this thread won't be very useful for most of the people, but eh, better do it just in case!

Thread: [Tutorial] Prepare everything for your suitcase

Started by: BaffanBaffan

Being an extremely nervous and anxious guy, I always try to prepare myself weeks ago for events like ESA. I don't pretend to be the best at it, but I think I can show you how I prepare myself to give you an idea of what you should consider. And of course, add your tips too! The more prepared you are, the less nervous you will be.

Make a multi-column list
Here is a document for example
I also made a Vlog related to this subject: Suitcase Time

As you can see, I split everything in categories.

Clothes
This is the first column because that's probably what will require most of your preparation actually. You will need to prepare at least 1 week ago, to be sure everything is cleaned, that you missed nothing, etc.

Consoles, Games, Controllers
You are asked to bring your stuff if you can. If you are mentally well prepared about your runs, you should know what to bring so you can do this 2 or 3 days before leaving.

Multimedia
You will most likely take your phone, don't forget it and its charger and cables, everything needed. You may want to bring a camera to take some photos, be sure to take it too. Charge them both by the way.

Hygiene
More than the clothes, this section is the one where you should put more than needed if any doubts. Being clean is important in a big event. Besides, you will feel more fresh, more confident, and then less nervous.

Miscellaneous
Having a short bottle of hydro-alcoholic gel is a must. Even if everyone is clean, a place with 200 people for a week will most likely propagate some diseases. This is a good precaution against them.
Get your passport, your identity card, your plane tickets, your money, everything important.

Labeling your stuff in advance
I made a Vlog related to this subject: Labeling Time
Put some white scotch tape on your console, controllers, anything. Then write your name on it. Especially if, like me, you plan to let your stuff on free use (I don't need to use my 3 controllers at the same time). Do it days or weeks ago to remove 1 nervousness point.

Bring power adapters if you are from UK, Ireland, America, Canada...
For any chargers, consoles, etc you are bringing over. I'm sure you can buy them over in Skovde, but the last thing you want to be doing is traipsing up and down willys looking for one after a long days traveling. (tip by tdawg91)

Therio your messages reminded me that the DDR last year was awesome, I would love to be able to bring my Metal Dance Pad but I can't.

Even if the majority of the side events like Poker, Cards against Humanity, Mystery Tournaments etc are done spontaneously at the event, maybe some people would like to discuss about new ideas of what to do.

Personally, I like the Munchkin game. I don't know how known it is outside of France, but here I have a lot of friends who play it. Sadly I don't have the game and even if I had it it would probably be french. So are other people motivated?

Anyway, this thread is for you, if you have suggestions or any other things. Feel free to use it!

I think you understood nothing at all. Seriously, is it that hard to understand? "it's time for it to skip a marathon" is a perfectly clear reason. Just watch SGDQ if you want your sm64.

This is it. I finally did after hours of struggle. Alisia Dragoon in 14:54, sub 15 happened, new PB, close to WR, and even theoretically a WR because the timing of the actual WR from years ago is kinda weird.

Link:

I'm not lowering the estimate of 20 minutes because a bad run could easily be 16 or 17 minutes and with a death, but I am confident about the estimate, no problems.

It took me 20 minutes to understand that it means that you are at the South of Sweden and not in the North. This way it makes sense!

Well, I don't know how convenient it is for you to do that. Not about the road but about the time you planned to arrive.

If I assume you are somewhere near Helsingborg that would mean you would need to leave at 4:30 / 5PM to be around 7PM at the Landvetter Airport right?

Anyway, if it doesn't bother you, sure I would be very happy of you offer this to me! ❤️

Edit: I just didn't realize you were German. Stupid me. 👍️

I land at the Landvetter airport the Saturday 27th of June at 7PM Europe Time. Does someone will be with a car around that time eventually? The trains won't have optimal times at all and I will most likely be at Skövde at 1AM otherwise...

OK, forget the message I posted 2 hours ago. I just did a 15:06 in Alisia Dragoon!

Link:

I finally reached sub 15:10, which was possible long ago already but RNG was really mean with me and that made me really frustrated. I am very happy it finally happened! Now if I could get sub 15 before ESA, I would be even more happier.

Reminder, WR is 14:48 if converted from PAL to NTSC. And my sum of best now IS 14:48. I know it's reachable.

New PB in Alisia Dragoon: 15:17!

Link:

This is a 14 seconds improvement over my previous PB. More coaching from Toothache42, more practice of the hardest sections again and again, and more little improvements over some little things. Here is the secret of a better PB.

I will try to reach 15ish before ESA. WR is 14:49 if converted from PAL to NTSC. 15ish seems a good goal. At least sub 15:10 pretty soon.

Well... Forget my update from 9 hours ago, I did a new PB in Alisia Dragoon!

Link:

The new PB is 15:31! This is a 45 seconds improvement, because I just finally had a good and lucky run!
It is only partly true. With Toothache, the World Record holder, we said that someday he would coach me with every little things that go wrong in my run. And this day was today. I showed him my previous Personal Best, that was 16:16, and he analyzed everything. I told him what were mistakes only in this run, and what were mistakes I do everytime. Then I went live to have my coaching. First I did a kind of mock run to show him how was an usual "bad" run that I reset, then we trained every stage, every strat I wasn't using, and I learned 4 new strats. All of this took a little more than 2 hours. Then I did 1 hour of attemps, and finally, I just got it! ❤️

New PB in Alisia Dragoon, with a 16:16. This is a 9 seconds improvement over my previous PB. Still unlucky with stages 3, 6 and 7, which costs me the sub 16 I am waiting for. But once again, a PB is a PB.

First of all, I see that you are french. A lot of us are french actually, so if you have further questions after my reply, PM me on Twitch in french if it's easier for you. ^^

My answers are for anybody else that would ask the same questions

About the region of the game. The problem is that absolutely everybody plays on NTSC-U because of how convenient it is. All the french guys use a Freeloader with their Gamecube or Wii to be able to play NTSC games. Feel free to do the same when you can. The leaderboards only include NTSC-U because the game is already long enough. Adding times that are 20% longer for games that are hours long would be a nonsense...

About the advice on the runs, routes, etc. I can only recommend you to do what you probably already did. Which is to watch the JayMota16 or Dabomstew runs on the leaderboards, and tu study them. Watch the runs entirely. Yes, entirely. If you want to know what I did, I watched and studied 2 hours of run per day for 4 days. And read the Hub that is on the Guides section, there are a lot of documents we did, where you can learn everything related to NG and learn what are our actual strats and techs. Yes, it's gotta be long. It took me 3 weeks to study the theory before going on the practicing. It's because ToS is a hours long run, learning it wil be long too.

Remember that we are very active in NG ang NG+ for more than 2 years, and everything is pretty elaborated now. But trying to find new routes and ideas could still happen, and it will require a lot of dedication from you. Never forget that we gave to everybody all the keys to be able to do the same as we do. Absolutely everything or nearly is on the guides/routes, and is watchable in the videos. Good luck, you can do it with dedication!

Thread: Tales of Symphonia runners

Started by: BaffanBaffan

Hello everyone! This thread will introduce you the Tales of Symphonia speedrunners. Runners are free to introduce themselves here.

I am Baffan, I am 23 and I live in France. I play Tales of Symphonia casually since the release of the game, I never stopped playing it, I always played it in my life and I believe I never stopped playing this game more than a year. It's my favorite game ever and that will probably never change.

Obviously I became interested in ToS speedruns when I discovered speedrunning and other ToS runners. My focus was on NG+ because I did a ton of NG+ casually with my friends and I found it more funny at the moment. I was at ESA 2014 where I did a co-op run with people I never seen before, and that was a great experience! But for my next marathon I will do a very serious run with more skill. Probably NG then.

Hello everyone! I am Baffan, I speedrun Tales of Symphonia, and mayybe you saw my run at ESA 2014.

If you are interested in Tales of Symphonia speedruns and you want to ask questions, but you think it's not big enough to create a whole new thread, feel free to ask your questions here!

We are a lot of runners being active: Dabomstew, GreenMittenz, Black Razgriz, Jaymota16, FreeYourSoul, S18alg, LeGrandGrand and me.

We all switched to NG since NG+ is now very optimized. But we can help you for both NG and NG+!
We already posted links in the Guides section, feel free to use them!
