Not an update, simply a clarification as it was mentioned to me.

"Clocking up" a new 2DS - that is using custom firmware to set the clock to ~800MHz and enabling L2 Cache - is not banned and honestly probably encouraged if you're not using NTR to stream. The alternative is banning NTR as a way to record the game and that simply is not happening as requiring a ~$500USD investment to record the game in reasonable quality is not reasonable in the slightest.

It's also somewhat difficult to detect as the game does not consistently lag in certain areas where it lags sometimes.

In a perfect world, i'd rather have it banned, but that simply is not possible without alienating the majority of people who run the game or have expressed interest in running it.

Also of note, is that the best currently available way to record the game without a capture card in decent quality is using HzMod on a New 2DS XL, as HzMod hijacks a cpu in the console that is dedicated to the 3D effect - which while it still exists in the 2DS XL, is not actually used by the system in most cases.

I'm going to set up a full tutorial on how to stream with HzMod or NTR in the future.

Updated the 100% NIQ category to fix an arbitrary inconsistency in the rules. Collecting the Nemesis is now required as the Nemesis is in fact an item. This means all existing runs are invalid, but I never actually put them on the leaderboards anyways, so it's fine.

seeing as the unprecedented thing has happened of other people are submitting CS3D runs, just wanna say i'm quite sick so i might not verify runs immediately since i always retime, but i definitely see them

pls smash the records golder

also if you can please either make your submission videos downloadable or on youtube, that makes my life immensely easier

Thread: Rule Change for All Categories

As speedrun.com lacks any kind of basic individual community announcements, I am posting yet another thread reporting that after the poll was run, Time Attack use will be allowed in all categories going forwards.

Timing now begins on selecting either difficulty or Time Attack, depending on which you use to begin play - starting timing AFTER performing an item quit still remains NG+ exclusive.

This does not affect NIQ categories.

2020-01-15 changes:

1. Emulator/Hardware is no longer a subcategory. If the game ever becomes competitive enough that it needs that seperated again, it is literally clicking a checkbox for me to fix it, but I don't feel the game is competitive or optimized enough to where this matters and was quite messy before.

2. All categories without runs have been moved to Misc. If you submit a run to one of these categories, on approval the category will be moved to the main lb.

3. Reverse Boss Order added as a category.

Over the next few weeks, I will be filling out Resources and Guides with most of my updated notes and explanations.

Thread: What is allowed re: recording your runs

So, to submit to this leaderboard, we need exactly two things:

- a way to accurately re-time your run, if needed
- a way to verify your run

Due to the nature of 3DS speedrunning, this isn't quite as simple as plugging into a capture card and going, so here are your options.

1. Emulator - Citra

Citra is allowed on its own leaderboard due to having fairly high accuracy for Cave Story 3D. Load times are drastically faster so it cannot be on the same leaderboard, and we've opted to allow turbo should Citra ever add it. Feel free to just run to your heart's content on emulator.

2.1. Hardware - Timing - A Line-In Cable is REQUIRED.

So, besides a hardware capture card which are exceedingly rare now, there isn't a particularly easy way to capture the game at a steady framerate. This means that you will need to have a way of directly capturing audio from the 3DS, which is as simple as a cheap $5 line-in cable. If there's some other way to record audio, that is fine, but some form of direct feed audio is required for all submissions.

2.2. Hardware - Verification - the NTR "problem"

So, after some testing, it seems that NTR does not significantly speed up load times. Thus, the following methods of recording 3DS video output are allowed (and just ask if there's something missing from this list)
- NTR
- HzMod
- a hardware capture card
- a webcam pointed at your 3DS, so long as we can tell what is going on
Honestly accessibility is most important on a system that is quite difficult to capture for. NTR/HzMod must be noted as being used for your submission, but this does not remove it at all.

2.3. The installed vs legit cart issue

It's as simple as there's no way to enforce this reasonably. You may use an installed version of the game despite CS3D having never been released digitally.

Thread: Leaderboard not displaying runs

Leaderboard for Cave Story 3D was created a few days ago (https://speedrun.com/cs3D) but runs are not showing up and there don't seem to be any obvious settings that are preventing this, nothing in the several runs that have been submitted appear to be causing the issue.

I attempted to contact support a few days ago with no response, though I imagine they're quite busy with some volume of requests.

Is there a way to fix this that I'm missing?

yea, wiiware actually seems to have quite a number of small things different about it compared to other versions, including what seems to be minor differences in physics (particularly in the air) though i haven't yet taken the time to quantify them.

yea i've seen the blue map skip.

let's just say i had a very bad mental health mishap and i'm doing better now and leave it at that.

i was mostly asking because apparently our actual timing is when the screen fades in from white and i don't remember that being a thing, i swear it was pressing z+x on that screen before.

is anyone going to care if i change the timing to full fadeout from last screen and retime the literal 2 runs on the boards rather than our timing apparently being as the score starts to display which seems a little weird to me.

just going to edit this since finding anything vaguely recent on this game is a pain for anyone else who comes across this.

the low% route would use the passcode tool to modify stuff, search up bluey lewis's channel on youtube and there's a video on there somewhere showing getting to the final area without red trenchcoat.

red trenchcoat does not appear to be skippable, as there's no way seemingly to get through the final screen before Athetos. low% thus is the 6 items in that video, plus red coat (and anything additional you would need to get there), unless a clip to both get into the spot with blocks is by destroying the blocks and get through the horizontal double gates directly below the entrance to athetos.

not entirely sure what a no passcode tool low% looks like but i'm going to look into it.

i can see there's a thread with posts from 2 years ago on 6% being possible, and i'm wondering if there's any info anywhere on what exactly low% would entail.

discord link is dead (possibly doesn't exist anymore?) and i'd like to get into running this game.

there's also a comment on 100% being rerouted, is this the route used in the runs on the lb atm?

so our only 100% run vod is non-working (even if you fix the url, which whoever accepted it really should've made sure the vod actually played but that's whatever)
