What you're talking about is edge-boosting. You have to bump your head against the corner to gain a bit of extra height.

United Statesbtrim6 years ago

You used the cane before Janken, so I guess you don't feel that's a glitch. If you'd like to write the rules on what isn't allowed I can add them to a new category and move the runs.

I still don't see the point, but whatever.

This is not urgent but I'd like to request mod for Kenseiden.

The current mod has been inactive for 2 years and I've contacted them on twitch.

If not, please remove the 999h submission. [Edit: normally I wouldn't ask, and all I'd be doing is cleaning up the board and requiring verification so I could see that it was at least an actual run. Feel free to mod the actual active runner instead]

Since you seem to be so insistent, I added a variable.

I then went through each run and by your own feeling of what a glitch is, I determined that every single run (though I can't determine randomjulien's run as the video is deleted) uses a "glitch" of some kind (at least the pause before janken).

So there you go, you have your pseudo-category.

Everyone is able to do the screen wrap glitch if they want.

What about the dialog skip glitch?

Not exactly a platform, but I'd like to request Brazil as a potential game region. BR (PAL-M) would fit I guess.

This is fairly relevant for Master System speedruns.

Thanks

Yes, @Quivico I'm not sure where I said that I didn't.

I use the "standard" rounding convention (not a gaussian one, but we could add that option to the mix!) that 51:09.5 is closer to 51:10 than it is to 51:09

thread: The Site
United Statesbtrim6 years ago

It's neither 51:09 nor is it 51:10.

Both are wrong. So what's your point?

Please fix the (possibly now notorious) number bug.

I generally use standard rounding. (round to nearest number, 5 goes up).

  1. It avoids most "ties" nicely even if you're not ready to start tracking ms for everything. 2-way ties that can't be handled in this way can be done by truncating the faster time and rounding the slower.
  2. It's a more accurate accounting of what's happening than truncating (always rounding down).
  3. I have a math background so it's just... what I do.

I've gone back and forth on this type of thing, but the way the leaderboards and moderation are set up, I almost always prefer creating multiple games, one for each time-comparable version of the game.

In theory, this means that every game should (IMO) be capable of being its own "series" so game mods can add multiple leaderboards for incomparable versions of the game and not have to wait for the site admins. In practice, with the current feature-set, you could either request a series for the game and create new leaderboards, or only request the game for the platform you're interested in. There are obviously situations where this isn't cut and dried, but in my experience it works better.

To answer your question of using (CPU) for a distinguishing title, I would probably never use CPU as it doesn't mean anything. It's vague and misleading. There's always going to be a CPU.

I'm not sure what I'd use though. I think the site would be better served by creating a Series for a multi-platform game by default, even if it never had sequels, such that you can (1) offload some of the game creation, and (2) have separate full boards with separate moderation as needed for each platform if and when someone wants to submit a run.

Gauging interest in a series relay, ideally this December (2017)

Following the link for the platform on a run doesn't work.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to a run. For example, https://www.speedrun.com/run/wzpw3k8y
  2. Click the platform. (the URL is https://www.speedrun.com/games#platform=26)

Expected results: The list of games will be filtered by the platform of the run.

Actual results: The list of games effectively has no filter.

The pause button is on console for Master System.

You won't get any sympathy from me for not wanting to use original equipment ;p

United Statesbtrim6 years ago

What emulator are you using? Kega Fusion is a well-accepted emulator for SMS games.

If you're using keyboard then you might not have enough of a key rollover (how many keys you can have register at a time).

United Statesbtrim6 years ago

That all sounds just about right.

As far as the capture goes, you'll need to be able to capture composite or S-video for your dazzle to work. Capturing RGB is a huge money and time sink I wouldn't approach if you're new and not sure if it's the thing to you.

As for submissions, yes, you'd want to submit as NTSC-US as I assume you're playing the BIOS version. There may be some minor differences (aside from the Hamburger and button swap) but unless there's a major discrepancy all the 60Hz versions go together.

This site doesn't really handle PAL/NTSC/50/60Hz the way I'd like it to, so for now, don't worry about it and submit as NTSC-U.

This is just an idea since I'm not sure how you have things organized, but if you're elevating the constituent nations into their own first-level countries, then it seems logical to provide an option for UK in addition to them.

So, you'd have (alphabetical order to avoid sectarian responses, apologies if other nations are currently available that fall into the umbrella)

  1. England (regions possibly forthcoming)
  2. Northern Ireland (counties possibly forthcoming)
  3. Scotland (regions possibly forthcoming)
  4. United Kingdom (no regions; pick the others)
  5. Wales (regions possibly forthcoming)

If you're elevating the constituent nations to the top, then you can also provide the UK as a nation at the top, even if you remove the special cases in code throughout the site.

I don't see the point; Just play without the glitches you're uncomfortable with. A different route does not a category make.

I'll consider adding a variable that says "uses glitches" if you really want to compare yourself against runs with or without glitches, but this is opening a significant can of worms about what is and isn't a glitch.

Headsets: The broken-in bands + the new ear cups made a massive difference in my comfort while doing a run. I still don't like them for aesthetic and hygienic reasons, but at least I was comfortable this time.

I was able to use a bike this year, and it made my week much more enjoyable. While I didn't need one of the pink rentals, making them available is important.

The main thing that really soured my mood on several occasions was the sheer amount of trash/food lying around everywhere. Mostly-full-but-open soda cans, BK bags, pizza boxes, candy, etc. It's not a big deal for me to do some minor cleanup around where I'm playing, but a more concerted effort to have crew there to clean up during the low-usage hours would be much appreciated. I'm a slob myself but I at least try to keep it together for a week while I'm one of hundreds instead of alone.

The business(es?) soliciting at the venue felt very out of place and awkward at all times. I assume this was either a conceit to Vaxjo or a sponsorship deal, but it really didn't fit with the event.

One of the ads on the wraparound display had a white background. It made it distracting when it came up in the rotation.

Edit: I forgot about this. The schedule on my phone didn't adjust to my time zone properly. It gave me times in EDT so I had to keep adding 6 hours. Either links to horaro schedules or a quick way to fix the timezone in use would have been nice. It's not the biggest deal but when trying to interpolate two schedules, figure out what time to get up for an early morning run, etc was annoying.
