The slide Mario does when B and Z are pressed. I just wondered what the best use for them is. They seem very slow and inconvinient to do instead of dives or longjumps. But maybe some of you guys have some ideas?
The only time I've seen them in a good run is at the entrance to hazy maze. They slide into the pool to enter the level after getting the first star.
I think you can use them to get the shoot to the shoot into the wild blue star after you get to the top
Didn't Pannen prove that slides were the fastest way to travel? Or does that require really precise recovery?
they are useful on a long straight road, which doesnt really appear in sm64-runs. but if you do them, you must roll-out frameperfect, otherwise you'll loose speed. longjumps are most consisten, so they are perferred in speedrunning. jumpdives are good, if you - again - have frameperfect input. see this here:
like gothic said, look at the start of ssl reds. slidekicks are useful there because they allow you to keep the speed you gained from the slope. other basic movement techniques, like longjumping, diving and jumpdiving have a speed cap so you using them would be slower in this particular situation. you can also pull a slidekick off with very little speed, giving you a quick boost. i mostly recall that being useful for backups, such as going quick into a loading zone and being able to dive again on "quicksand"(such as in ssl pyramid) if you're slowed down by the sand a lot already. theres some other little movement in the game where slidekicks are theoretically faster but it's mostly not a good idea to implement in rta. also on the topic of the movement techniques, in sm64 you always have to take the spacing into account. "longjumps are most consisten, so they are perferred in speedrunning. jumpdives are good, if you - again - have frameperfect input.", thats simply not true. all these movement techniques have a different outcome in the stages because you have to take the spacing, angles, texture, etc. into account.
We would like to announce that VC and EMU subcategories are now active on the Stage RTA leaderboards (under "Levels"). Stage RTA involves collecting all the stars in a given stage including the 100 coin star. Timing starts on star select and ends upon collecting the final star. You are allowed to us
