Project Base FAQ - 104%

Q: What is Super Metroid: Project Base?

  • Project Base is a ROM hack of Super Metroid that keeps the original map mostly intact, while adding new stuff. Well-known sequence breaks and shortcuts have been left alone, with many new ones added. Highly speedrunnable, and with a level of difficulty that is accessible to anyone. Easy to learn, Difficult to master.

  • General movement is less inhibited, with many new tricks made possible. Respin in midair, backflips, momentum keeping from a jump, just to name a few.

  • Modified enemies and bosses, including AI and graphical touch-ups

  • Faster elevators, doors, room transitions and item-collection sequences (no fanfare!)

  • Bug fixes and polish applied whenever possible

  • New rooms added, others expanded and/or merged

Q: Why is it called 104%? Isn't it 100%? -The Short Answer: 104% is what the game says at the end when you get all the items. So that's what we call it.

-The long answer: When thebegrimed1 was editing this hack, in recent versions he took out map stations in the game and replaced them with extra missile tanks. Every missile tank is 5 missiler per pack, so Instead of 230 Missiles, there are 250, making 4 extra missile packs total. The percentage counter in the game, in terms of programming, is not actually a percentage counter, but an item counter. In the original Super Metroid, there are exactly 100 items to pick up, so for each item you collect, it's "1%". Since there are 4 extra missile tanks in this romhack, as mentioned before, this bumps the total item collection counter to 104, and thus "104%" is 100% item collection.

Q: Are you required to fill in the map for 104%? -Nope, the only requirements for this category are collecting all the items from the map in their respective locations, and then beating the game.

Q: Why do you kill sporespawn? Can't you skip that boss? -No, in this version, the supers from sporespawn are locked behind a door that only opens when you kill sporespawn.

Q: Do you need to Save The Animals™ to achieve 104%? -No. Again, all you are required to do is collect every item, and then beat the game.

Q: Are you allowed to use the GT Code to complete this category? -No. You must collect each item from their respective location.

Q: Are glitches allowed in this category? -Yes. Many are used, such as Zebetite Skip, Reverse Maridia Tube Clip, PBK Clip, and Short Charging.

Q: How are you doing manual damage boosts/backflips? -That is achieved by holding down the run button and jump button pre-emptively, then holding down on the d-pad, and rolling the d-pad in the opposite direction which samus is facing. Basically, a backwards hadouken. So for example, if samus is facing right, you hold run and jump, then hold down (you should be crouching) and roll your controller from down to left.

Q: Your game's colors and another runner's game colors are different from each other, why is that? -Project Base 0.7.2 has 2 color palettes: Regular Palettes, and Vanilla Palettes. Regular Palettes recolor the entire game to differentiate this romhack from its vanilla counterpart, while Vanilla Palettes keeps the colors and tilesets of the original game (mostly) intact. Both versions run at the same speed, and are therefore allowed.

Q: Is the Justin Bailey mod for this romhack allowed? -No, as it modifies samus's hitbox, in such a way that many rooms become easier to do optimally, and therefore gives an unfair advantage over the base game.
