Practicing for newbie :)

Hi!

I've just started getting into running in the last couple of days, some of you may have seen me bugging the streamers and ruining their runs with my questions (sorry!).

I'm from Australia and have a PAL console which I understand runs at 25FPS and is generally considered bad for running. As it's still early days I think it would be silly to spend the hundreds of dollars it costs to get an NTSC console + display device, gameshark + correct version of the game imported to Australia.

So my question is, if I buy a controller to USB adapater, can I do realistic practice on an emulator (P64 1.6?) that I will be able to apply what I've learned to an actual console setup later on if it's something I continue with?

I've been able to practice on my PAL console and start learning but not having save states and practicing on a slower version of the game seems pretty non-productive.

Thank you! Syno

Yes, Project 64 v1.6 is a great usage for emu practice. You can also do runs on it if you want.

Project64 1.6 is as if youre on a console! I do have an N64 but it's more comfortable for me to run on EMU (mostly because of recording and better visuals). And you can use any controller you want!

Just be sure to set it up properly.

Awesome :) does it have the same lag? Or will that be something I have to adjust to when playing on console?

Croatia

As far as i know it's lag free (never had any). But in this guide (http://www.speedrun.com/sm64/guide/v67de) it is recommended to change the counter factor to 1 instead of 2 (Options - Settings - Rom Options) or else DDD will lag even more than on console. I can't confirm that tho.

I guess that's my only concern, is it hard to switch between the two? As on a console you'd have to compensate for lag?

It´s not too hard, if you use the same controller. Do a few full game runs and you´ll adapt to console.

Ye you should get an official controller with a Raphnet adapter and use Project64 v1.6. You can apply the knowledge and movement you have over to console when/if it gets to the point you decide to switch. However, it will take some getting used to as the input delay wouldn't be the same necessarily and you will have to learn a bunch of lag reductions (which will also make you have to hold different angles)

Thanks everyone.

Hey Gothic, yeah I guess I'll learn and perform the lag reductions on the emulator as I go anyway. I already have a MayFlash adapter (http://www.mayflash.com/Products/N64SNESSS/PC043.html), is this okay or do I need the Raphnet adapter?

Thanks again everyone!

United Kingdom

With that adapter you will have increased input delay compared to Raphnet. I used Mayflash for a little just 'cause I had it and I definitely have way more input delay compared to N64 (and I even use an old LCD TV, not a CRT). I haven't used a Raphnet adapter but that is what people recommend using and say that it has less input delay than Mayflash.

Thanks Gothic!
