I'm new to speed running, so i have a couple of questions. If i have a PS4 but no capture card, is there a way for me to do a valid speed run?

I really don't want to record from my phone, but if there is no other way, i'll do it. Will my runs be accepted if i record them with a timer from my phone? I also want to know if i ended up buying the capture card, how can i have the timer and the run on the same screen?

I appreciate any help.

Playstation 4 and XBox One have apps that can stream directly to Twitch for you. You can also record (in hour chunks iirc) to the PS4 hard drive.

You can only add splits to the video if you add them after the fact. The app on the PS4 will only be gameplay.

You can use something called Remote Play to get the PS4 to "stream" to your computer so you can use that video in a program like XSplit or OBS (where you can add splits and anything else to your scenes) but Remote Play can be highly unstable and prone to drops.

If you absolutely want splits on a run, then you're better off getting the game capture off the PS4 or downloading the VOD and then re-watching it in XSplit/OBS with the splits overlayed on the video (but that can get really annoying to do, so you're honestly better off just keeping the splits for yourself and not worrying about having them on the video).

Well, there's need to be a timer on the run i'm trying to make (Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage), so i'm going to record it on my phone (the final segment with Mickey is locked), watch it in OBS with the splits overlayed, and then send it. Thank you! :D

I'm really going to evaluate the purchase of a capture card.

As a prominent member of the KH community, I can tell you that a timer is not required for short runs (around 90 minutes or less) so you do not need one to submit it.
