Interested in learning the game (eventually). Have questions.

Good evening.

While my life does not allow me to attempt speedrunning (or gaming in general), I would like to learn this game some day. That being said, I do have some questions that I will ask before I forget about them.

This is run on the Japanese version of the game, in Multiplayer mode with the GBA Linker, correct? Why in Multiplayer, with the GBA Linker?

Does that mean I will have to acquire a Japanese Gamecube? Will I also have to acquire a Japanese GBA and a Japanese GBA Linker? Can a GBA SP be used instead? If either or can be used, what are the pros and cons between the GBA and GBA SP?

What are the gameplay differences between JP, NA, and EU?

If I have any more questions, I'll just drop by again, but for now, that's it. Thank you if a response is left.

"This is run on the Japanese version of the game, in Multiplayer mode with the GBA Linker, correct?"

Yes, the Japanese version has a Multiplayer Exclusive glitch that allows you to infinitely duplicate money, which makes the run much more consistent. You can run on other versions but it's quite a bit slower.

"Does that mean I will have to acquire a Japanese Gamecube?"

Don't run on a Gamecube. It's much more stable to run on a wii (Less chance of disc read errors, slightly better loading), also that way you can have a Wii from Any region and Softmod it so that you can play games from anywhere, including Japanese ones.

"Will I also have to acquire a Japanese GBA and a Japanese GBA Linker? Can a GBA SP be used instead? If either or can be used, what are the pros and cons between the GBA and GBA SP?"

You can use a GBA and a Link cable from any region. As for GBA vs SP, it's just preference really. The SP has the inbuilt backlight, but the Start/Select buttons are a little more convenient on the GBA imo. It just comes down to what you want.

"What are the gameplay differences between JP, NA, and EU? "

JP has the money duping glitch which makes it the fastest and quite a bit more consistent

NA has a lot of random factors in getting the materials you need in the run, but the gameplay is basically the same

PAL version runs at 5/6 speed and as such, is a bad version to speedrun on. The run is identical to the NA one so it's by far the slowest version.

Thank you, MLSTRM, for the response!

I do have some more questions that I thought of, and then I'll be out of your head until I can try to run this game.

Is there a preferred race? And why? I honestly don't remember much of the game at this point.

How recommended is it that I pick up a copy of a strategy guide? This is just a question I usually ask in general.

Are there any other differences between Any% and All Dungeons besides the most obvious one?

Again, thank you for the response, and I will play this game. Some day. SOME DAY. I PROMISE YOU I WILL.

For race, you should run any of them except for yuke. Yuke is slooow because of their low STR Stat. Selkie is currently the fastest race, followed by lilty, then clavat; but the time difference between them isn't very big in the overall view of things. I have a strategy guide, and it helped me tons when I was learning the route, so I'd recommend it, but it isn't necessary. The only difference between any% and all dungeons is that in all dungeons you must goto each dungeon at least once before finishing the game. Any% doesn't need to do that. I hope I helped, and I hope to see some run submissions from you :)

To add to that, a lot of the information you would get from the strategy guide is chest locations and artefact drops, which are pretty important in the run, especially for hearts/+str

The only other difference between Any% and All Dungeons apart from the obvious is the artefact drops mean you're way more likely to get higher +str bonuses or hearts so your ending stats usually end up being a little higher than with Any% (And also the route is different but that goes without saying)

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately, my life is pretty bad at the moment. It'll be quite a while before I'll be able to get into any sort of speedrunning (or gaming actually).

I really only wanted these questions answered before I forget about them in the waves of time.

This will probably be the first or second game I'll attempt to speedrun.

Again, Many Thanks for the answers and replies.

Hey, rather than make a new thread I'm in the same boat as Reso, being interested in getting into this game. I have mostly everything needed other than a JAP disc. Seeing as softmodded Wii's seem to be acceptable, I wondered the communities thoughts (is this the main place for game discussion?) on using Nintendont as an alternative to importing a JAP copy.

I'm not sure how the other runners feel about USB loading, but I don't feel it should be allowed for speedrunning at all. I don't know how Nintendont deals with load times, but I know other methods such as Dios Mios DRASTICALLY reduce load times, thus giving an unfair advantage. I personally wouldn't allow it, but I'm not the only moderator here.

Yeah, like Ash said, USB Loading is a big nono, especially for GCN games, since it makes a huge difference to the loading times throughout the run. I also wouldn't allow runs done on it. While it works fine for practice, if you want to do runs, you're going to have to import a copy of the game.

Suspected as much. Went ahead and ordered a copy as it was far cheaper than I expected. Thank you guys for the fast and definitive answers!

It's a 5 dollar game in Japan, and while importing is going to raise that a bit, it's not the hardest game to get ahold of at a reasonable cost. And any unofficial versions or modifications to a game or console to make it run faster is a no no, so you'll have to run on disk, probably through a modded Wii.

That said, practicing the final gauntlet of bosses on emulator using a GCN to USB adaptor with save states is an absolute godsend.
