Segmented speedrun help

Hi guys! I'm new to speedrunning :). I have quick question. I don't understand what is segment? Segment is single level/mission or only save? Also segmented runs are only when you save and load for the best time you can achieve or even when you start level/mission from the beggining to achieve the best time. Finally last question how many times are you complete whole games before start to speedrun it? One time is enough? Thanks for answers. Cheers! Have good night! :)

It can have two meanings:

 1. A normal run where you have loaded a saved game or checkpoint.

 2. A run where you use saves frequently and only keep the best attemps that you later edit together. Such a run can be done by a team over multiple months in the extreme case.

 1. A normal run where you never load a saved game or checkpoint. I think that's "single segment"
 2. I think that's called "segmented" or "multi-segmented".

A segment is a part of a run that can be more or less splitted up.

For example, when you save glitch (reminder that SaveGlitch is Out of Bounds) in Source games, you actually segment your run, but you have to time the segments that you fail (for example if you fail into the goo) too. In the other hand, "segmented" runs are runs that are made by a team (for example SourceRuns) that works in a team to make the best segments during months/years and edit them together after.

So, a "RTA" (real time attack) run will mean you have to count every segment that you failed in. A "segmented" run means you have to count only the segment that you achieve well.

WARNING : Sometimes, "segmented" runs refers to "saves" that you have to do in-game (to be safer or to perform a glitch); so it depends on the community.
1) A normal run where you never load a saved game or checkpoint. I think that's "single segment"
Yeah, I accidentally described the opposite.

Ok thank you. And how many times are you play the game before you speedrun it?

England

I'd say as long as you know the game and the route you're taking, as many as you feel comfortable with. I did 2 casual run throughs of Lego Batman before I started running it, then started working on the routing from there.

Ok thanks mate :)
