What if I disagree with the rules of a specific speedrun?

There's a new game that came out and I was practicing running the game, and when I checked this site, someone else posted a run of the game with a decent time, but the rules on the stop time are somewhat different from what I agree with.

I know it's a petty thing, their rules only extend the game by two loading screens, but it made me wonder.

What can I do if I disagree with the rules another player has set?

If the player who submitted the run is a mod of that game, I recommend asking them (doing it nicely will increase the chances, I've found) to explain why they choose the rules like that, and if possible, suggest that the rules are changed.

What is the name of the game? What are the rules? Why do you disagree with them? How do you suggest they be changed?

I noticed a similar issue when I started practicing Harvest Moon 64 runs- some categories ask that timing start when you gain control of your character, and some ask that timing start on the screen where you name your character. In general, though, if all the runs in a certain category are all timed using the same ruleset, the results will be ¤relatively¤ the same.

I don't know the details or what game you are referring to, but other games that have had this issue in the past resolved it by creating different categories for different systems of timing. For instance, runs for Half-Life and the PC version of FFX, among others, have an option of runs "with loads" and "without loads": https://www.speedrun.com/hl1 https://www.speedrun.com/ffx#PC

I would just talk to them. It's entirely possible that they're reasonable and will work with you :). Also, what part of washington are you in? (if you don't mind me asking)

One of my games starts with an unskippable 3 and a half minute long cutscene. Rules state timing starts at file select, so whoopee woo, nothing happens until 3:26 is on the timer. To me that's the dumbest thing in the world, but I just roll with it.
