Are color codes legal? [EMU]

So, the thing is.. color codes are nothing more than cosmetic changes and cannot effect gameplay by all means.

This thought is kind of a hit or miss either way you look at it, but it would actually be kind of cool imo if we had the ability to use our favorite colors on Mario, and all have our own enjoyable colors to look at while speedrunning. I also think it would give us more diversity in some way; ways people could possibly recognize runners in the community by the colors they use i.e. how the competitive Smash scene use different colors throughout the vast selection of colors to choose from.

Yoshielectron has conveniently provided a perfect color generator that allows us to customize Mario's colors to our liking. I think something like this would be super cool in the SM64 speedrunning community tbh.

How does moon jumping have any thing to do with a minor cosmetic difference?

how does being dictated to "default color only" make sense palette swapping isn't an issue. why so biased to an idea that practically does no harm?

did you see the link I provided, sir? it's a color code generator, and works beautifully.

I had a similar concern with the no music cheat. It apparently doesn't change lag or affect the gameplay at all but they still don't allow it. I don't really see a reason but it's up to them I guess.

The "no music" cheat may have been banned because it counts as disabling a game function, I think. I don't really see a problem with that cheat myself. Or maybe they think no music makes it easier to splice or something, not really sure. But I mean, having a different color doesn't do any thing, besides change the visual color appearance.

no music reduces lag

It's easier to just say please don't use any cheat codes than to split hairs about each and every cheat code's significance. Is it that unreasonable to ban using cheat codes in a speedrun? I didn't think this would be something people complain about.

It's simple: Everyone is supposed to play the same game, no changes whatsoever. While cosmetic changes most likely wouldn't be a problem in practice it does pose some theoretical problems.

One very good example: Visual Cues. Imagine a really dark level with some slightly darker spots on the ground - barely indistinguishable, probably not a very reliable cue. Make the spots (or the ground surrounding it) way brighter: It suddenly becomes a way better visual cue!

This could go even further. As for example turning super bright levels darker so that they become more appealing / pleasing to the eye - potentionally reducing stress (on the eyes or even in general) in some form or another.

Same stuff applies to audio changes, even though with audio you can at least just mute your TV if that's prefered. Hope this clears things up why ANY kind of changes to the game should never be OK.

That honestly makes plenty of sense, and I do see your point. Instead of posing risks, it's just best to say no to cheats, and I can understand in that case. I'll just use em' in practice then.

It does reduce lag? Aw man... Well at least that one makes sense then. In that case, it must be fine to mute everything right?

Even if you're not allowed to use color codes to submit a time to these boards, you can still run with a color code and simply not have it verified here. I realize that partially defeats the purpose as a lot of people solely speedrun to try and adhere to this site, but speed running should be done for fun first and foremost.
