What do you do before starting a speedrun?

Eating and sleeping Kappa

South Carolina, USA

Other than doing a couple of quick level run-throughs to loosen up my fingers, I just make sure I'm not cold and that I have a full bottle of water.

Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Make sure I feel comfortable, go pee, drink something, set my laptop up with my console and get started :)

Before streaming I go though a small checklist of things before starting. If I'm expecting a long stream I'll sometimes get food or go to the bathroom first.

Before starting runs I'll usually practice segments that I'm not as consistent on. If the practice goes bad I'll grind until I get it right at least 4 times in a row (unless it's dictated by RNG). Then I'll actually start runs.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

Sometimes I practice the most difficult sections and sometimes I just start right away. On short games (i.e. below 20 minutes) I usually start instantly.

For very long games (i.e. Digimon World 3 which is around 7.5 hours with good rng!) I always did lots of things:

  • Check that I'm not tired, freezing or really sad or something. (Even though a slight anger sometimes helps on execution)
  • Go to the bathroom
  • Check that I have enough food, water, also a coffee is helpfull
  • make sure that nobody will enter my room the next hours (or at least that nobody will interrupt me)
  • turn off my phone - I wouldn't answer anyway
  • get my chair comfy with pillows - seven to eight hours can be really long sitting on a chair

I tell myself how well I'm gonna do (Gotta keep the positive mindset).... and then proceed to cry when everything goes wrong.

...Pee bottle?

I'd...rather just hold it or wait for a pause moment than have a pee bottle.

South Carolina, USA

I guess I can't judge since I've never run anything over an hour...

Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

I made a run over 3 hours and honestly it's not fun. Games under 1h are great but above it's a torture for me.

Chiba, Japan

... To go to toilet for peeing after pausing the game to make myself more glued to the gaming ? Oo

Nah just kidding, but as a speedrunner who gives it a try occasionally, if not too "often", I'm super careful of doing following things if you hope to gun for a good result at the end :

1, Check out the route you're going to take / locations of all the enemies you are going to face with. Since speedrunning requires you to squeeze yourself to beat the game as fast as possible without doing anything that turns out futile at the end, it's crucially important to search for any possible route / strategies that saves you the utmost amount of time. It's out of question to pull off the best result or much less "to be better at it" without understanding what you're going to do beforehand in my opinion.

2, How you're going to defeat the enemies in the inevitable battles against them the game yields you at times. If you're planning to do a speedrun in an action / horror game it's equally as much significant for you to get to know how you're going to beat such "unavoidable" foes as quickly as possible, as making yourself familiar with the possible fastest route which guides you to the finish line in the shortest period of time. Making any blunders in the strategies you found out for tackling against those enemies in advance doesn't do any good to your result time either.

3, Finally and probably most important thing - to relax yourself. The game play can sometimes become longer and like any of the other sort of "gameplay" considered to be "demanding" (No damage run or knife only run in Resident Evil games, for instance), it gives you extreme tension and you must not let your attention go off during your game play in any way. I'd just recommend to sit back for a while to get back to your seat before actually giving it an attempt if you feel you're not ready to do the speedrun for some reason.

(P.S. Agghh, if you feel like you want to go pee in the toilet it's time to go there but BEFORE turning on your console, seeking for a pee bottle on halfway your playthrough after pausing the game ain't even worthy of contemplation in my case. :p )

Québec

turn my tv and console on and get going.

Just the standard speed runner schedule:

  • Go to the bathroom.
  • Make sure I have snacks and a coffee or soft drink.
  • Practice a few bits of the game to get the feel of it.
  • Laptop open with a few videos/tips of new speed run tricks.

And just start grinding from there.

British Columbia, Canada

I might practice some tricks briefly if I'm not confident, otherwise nothing else.

Since most runs in Elsword can range from 50 seconds to 15 minutes... I just review the route notes I made up for the dungeon I'm speedrunning XD I really want to play long speedrun at one point though...
