Play a game you like, because you need to support playing the same thing over and over again

Hi, and welcome to Speedrun.com!

If you're looking for help how to start, the first step is choosing which game you want to speedrun. It can be any game you want. It's best to start with a game you really like so that you can enjoy it while running. If you want something to start with, games that have a focus on speed, like Mario Kart 64, usually are easy to learn and play.

Once you know what you want to run, you can decide if you want to be competitive at all with it. If you're looking to have fun, the game rules are just guidelines and you can make up anything you want along the way. If you want to have a time on a leaderboard, then there'll be some rules to follow. They vary greatly from game-to-game, so be sure to check what they are. Some games have little to no runners, so you can be the first to write them. Most games with 15+ players have a community that can help you begin running a game.

Before you start your run, it's good to have some kind of timer to help you know how well you're doing. LiveSplit is one example of a program that keeps track of your previous runs and personal bests. Streaming is optional, but recording is encouraged for posting times to the leaderboards. OBS and XSplit are the most commonly used streaming/recording software.

If you want to know more about glitches and exploits for a game, most games have videos and/or tutorials on them. Searching for them on Google or YouTube will usually provide results; otherwise you can contact the runners of the game for an explanation.
