Yeah, the reason for rejection was "This doesn't appear notable", hence my post above.
In the past week I requested several leaderboards. Frog King, Rolly, GET OUT of this Dungeon and Little Dragon Adventure.
These games are by no means very notable, they're rather new games released for the PICO-8. Today, within the same hour, LDA got rejected and the others accepted.
I don't see how a short(1:26) linear platformer like Frog King is apparently notable, but a metroidvania with death warps, health management and a lengthier speedrun(With my current route/strats you can't get a sub 6:00, I think) isn't. If anything, Frog King in this case is less notable of a game.
I'm fine with the site only accepting "notable" games, but this is just a contradictory use of the term.
Not a speedrun strat, but I figured I'd show this since this attempt was dead anyways https://streamable.com/6tdzn
Yeah a discord could be good. I have no idea if there's a community other than us, but it would be cool to see it grow. :)
Don't really have an opinion on the allowed/whether you should try this part, but just wanted to add that it's probably possible on emu @SchmidttyGames especially with FCEUX being this community's preferred emulator.
FCEUX is one of the few emulators that allows you to map multiple inputs to one button press, so you can just plug in 2 controllers before opening the emulator, then map the buttons and you're done. It would be even safe as opposed to trying this on a console, because you wouldn't need to swap a controller, they're both plugged in. Here's my start button mapped to my Right Shift(keyboard layout), JS1's start(cheap NES knockoff USB controller) and JS0's start(my NES30):
Also just tried it and it works. Did a run where I swapped between keyboard, cheap controller and nes30 on every stage and it worked just fine. Didn't even feel a big difference in my mashing, outside the cheap controller being loud in comparison.
I also agree that there's quite a large risk of cluttering the site up further. If it's integrated into speedrun.com it shouldn't be integrated into the existing leaderboards. At the most it should just be a link in the sidebar like Resources.
The biggest issue I see, however, is that you're trying to do the website equivalent of this comic: https://xkcd.com/927/ . What makes the format work for speedrunning is that what defines a "speedrun" can be very vague. There's games with no clear end goal, so a per game definition works. That's not really the case with highscores, so really the only issue you're having there is the same as the comic.
That said, I'm not necessarily against a sister site and I actually really like the domain that @Mighty has already bought: highscore.run. People who do highscore runs also mesh well with the people who do 1CC runs (especially since a Continue resets your score in most games). Sure, 'running' a game is mostly lingo from the speedrunning community, but it's also taken over to define other things, such as casual runs, highscore runs, etc.
Yes, NES Mini/Classic is allowed, just pick the platform when submitting a run:
As for VirtuaNES emulator, it's missing controller input and the frame counter, which is now required for runs that are faster than 13:30, so up to that point it's allowed. If you go faster, though, it's not.
That said, even with slower runs, you do have to show the reset in the video (Not sure if that's also the case for the NES Classic/Min)
Yes the NES NG discord vanished at some point, quite a while ago now.
I'm a bit curious, is there an advantage over controller in the run? I kinda feel like it could possibly matter in stage 4, but even there I don't see a straight forward advantage. Heck, the hitbox controller charleon uses, would share that advantage.
I agree on the recording/streaming, but then again, I have little experience with fceux.
Personally I was doing 1.1(just the version that itch.io's client downloaded). I also don't see a big issue in using either version. Not sure what the mentioned gap is, if it can change the route it might be worth looking into that to save even more time :D
I also added the changelog in the guides, although here's a repost in case someone looks in this thread instead of there:
1.1 changelog:
- Music for Haunted Woods and Western Banks has been switched and is now correct.
- Music for Haunted Woods now correctly plays when entering the area.
- Gap in the collision detection near the Western Banks key has been filled.
- The 2 spiky pillars near the Western Banks key have been tweaked, so they are now avoidable.
- The EXE file now has a custom Legend of Xenia icon.
While they're not really active anymore, some runners have done runs of multiple NGs back to back, such as InfestedRiche and Arcus who have both done the Ninja Gaiden NES Trilogy back to back(Riche holds the unofficial world record according to Arcus).
Multigame leaderboards do exist, but I assume it's up to the moderators of a series to request them.
Here's one example: https://www.speedrun.com/multiff
(you can find more if you look for "multi" in speedrun.com's searchbar)
I'm guessing the request page was changed in a way to only allow URLs from certain sites. I've been trying to request a game with this URL as description: https://the_a_drain.itch.io/kitty-quest
When I press Submit, it tells me it's not a valid link to an external page describing the game/series. It's the ¤only¤ external page describing the game series, containing the official name, author's name, date of release, description and platforms :P
¤edit¤ A friend suggested submitting the URL by replacing the underscores with dashes and that worked. So the real answer is that underscores in links aren't allowed :P I put it in the additional notes, but I imagine that's not the preferred way.
@jlt it's not just similar.. it IS the European version?
On another note, I don't think there's any active PAL runners, but you can see here that Kristian Emanuelsen AKA arctic_eagle has the WR in Shadow Warriors at SDA: http://speeddemosarchive.com/NinjaGaiden.html
He also has the fastest completion time of Ninja Gaiden OpieOP http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/highest-score-on-ninja-gaiden-(nes)
Yeah, I guess that's true. Overall, I'm not really sharing my opinion on any of these categories, mind you, mostly stating my observations.
I don't really care about the other categories that much(even on retrieval of a category, my runs won't be added on this board, unless a mod does so for me, I guess). I'll leave whether they're good or meme categories to everyone else, I don't have any intention of disputing the result. The whole "this is the right way" is not that interesting to me.
Oh and I didn't say we needed a 100% approval rate from every single runner in the community. I just wish it was asked to more people than nobody, though.
¤edit: And I apologize for the spam
Also Garadas, WH specifically said "meme/challenge runs".
Pacifist is a traditional category... where you don't kill enemies.
What we have on the board is not Pacifist, it's Pacifist Low%. Why? Not even the mods know, it's an arbitrary challenge. That's what makes it a meme/challenge category. Even All-Pickups was more legit than that.
Well, while I do admit that it was the removal of All-Pickups that inspired me to make this thread, it's not just about that category or categories as a whole. I mentioned this was the third consecutive case where the mods did this.
The second one was the addition of the offline emulator rules. From what I gather there was some discussion about cheating at other retro games, but we never saw such discussion here.
I'm mentioning that case, because it has nothing to do with me(I don't do PB attempts in Ninja Gaiden anymore) and because, like this case, it was done with no prior consultation with the community. It also has nothing to do with anything like a category.
The moderators are entitled to their opinion, but changing the board in a way that affects runners, should be consulted with the community first. If WhiteHat suddenly announces(he seems to be the public face of moderation here), that emulators aren't allowed and removes those runs, are we supposed to accept that?
I think it's bad to simply put this under "all pickups was removed!", because it's not the root problem. The problem is the lack of communication(this time it wasn't even announced) and the part that I mentioned above, that they're not questioning whether other people might disagree. Even if WhiteHat or another mod puts the category back, this won't change.
I think it would be cool if users liking your post didn't stack on each like.
Ideally: User 1, User 2, User 3 liked your post ..
Okay: User 3 liked your post .. User 2 liked your post .. User 1 liked your post ..
Currently: User 1, User 2, User 3 liked your post .. User 1, User 2 liked your post .. User 1 liked your post ..
Oh and I've heard someone say there wasn't a privacy policy on the site. Is that something that will get added some day?
Otherwise love it OpieOP
