The obvious thing is to go fast. This guide will talk about movement to help you do just that.

Starting movement: Position yourself in front of the orange walrus when starting the countdown for the race. If you do this, you can reach the first boost before it does and go fast

Movement without a boost orb: Boosting using your A ability does nothing without a boost orb. Don't do it. Save your energy.

Movement with a boost orb: Boost orbs make you go fast, but you go even faster if you boost with A while the boost orb speed is going. Using A also prolongs the effect of the boost orb. This is very good. Its probably best to not hold A though, otherwise you go too fast. Pushing A intermittently is good for controllable, sustainable, long lasting boost.

Movement during the trophy cutscene: It is possible to grab the trophy during the trophy cutscene. One way to set it up is to cross the finish line in the middle of the track, then wait until the cutscene shows the door opening. Once this happens, wiggle the analog stick rapidly between up and up-right until you hear the sound of the trophy being picked up. When you hear this sound, switch to holding up right and, after a second or two, start boosting with A. This setup is not perfect. If you don't hear the trophy grab sound and you think you should have, just stop moving so you don't end up half way down the track.

Other: -NEVER TAKE THE JUMP! -NEVER CUT CORNERS! This really only applies to the hairpin turn at the end of the lap. If you cut to the right of the farthest-out penguin, your lap doesn't count.
