I've changed this game to use subcategories instead of three separate categories for hard, normal, and easy.

If people hate this for some reason let me know and I can change it all back.

This seemed like an equivalent structure for this leaderboard and I wanted to try it.

United Statesbtrim8 years ago

I'm looking forward to these changes.

Is there potential in this new system for sub-series? Or is it just multiple series?

For example, I don't really mind helping with some of the "administration" of all "Disney" games, but it'd be nice to have a bit more granularity to the series that exist within that huge umbrella.

Edit - I've modded you. Just saw you had runs approved.

-- This is super late and I don't want to interfere if someone's already got back to you on this (Don't have a stake in the game -- just a facilitator.

Some participants noticed some irregularities with Double Dragon.

Here is what I've determined from testing the ROM on Japanese and US hardware as well as Fusion.

The ROM is a world ROM, and running it on a console in Japanese mode changes the number of continues to 2 instead of infinite. A visual change is that the 2p "Press Start" prompt is now permanently set to "GAME OVER."

We are not changing the game or goal at this time, though you'll want to make sure your emulator is set to USA for all games, and if you can, play on an export console at 60Hz (Genesis or 60Hz-modded SMS or MD)

Announcing the Master 15 #1.

A 15-game race of Sega Master System games on October 24th. See http://segaspeedruns.btrim.org/master15.html for the game list and more.

Yes, it's inspired by the Big 20 and the Portable Marathon.

Donald Land was put in the Disney series.

AFAIK Disney doesn't own McDonald's (yet)

"Obscure Platforms" is not obvious enough and the UI for platform selection should be updated to remove the need for that construct.

Realistic reasons:

  1. The obscurity of a platform is presumably arbitrary (if static) or based on an arbitrary point (if dynamic).
  2. It's annoying when setting up a game, looking for the platform, then thinking it must be under another name, then remembering the "Obscure platforms" UI.
  3. The resulting UI from hiding "Obscure platforms" is as complex as if it had twice the number of platforms already shown.
  4. Saving space on vertical scrolling in a page most people don't see or often use seems like a bizarre choice.

Whiny reasons: My favorite platform is obscure, so the above happens every single time.

Location: Very nice to be able to walk everywhere. I've been to Europe before, so I didn't have any mindblowing culture shock. Small town Sweden is just fine.

The hotel deal was great; the hotel was fantastic for what it cost.

Venue: A bit labyrinthine but quite spacious and nice. A bit warm towards the end but what can you do. Single room for both streams and practice was perfectly fine from an attendee's point of view. The only problem I had with sound was the occasional unmistakable thunderous sound of a chair falling over.

Equipment: Lots of RGB-capable 60Hz TVs. <3 Plenty of power outlets.

Scheduling: I think the schedule was fine. I do, however, think the open times on the yellow stream should have just be scheduled ahead of time. Whether that's just previously cut runs or a second submission process, it'd be better than the way it worked out this year.

Some have commented about empty seats during runs: Not a problem for me as a runner, I really only sit down and watch runs to support friends or if I really like the era of games, so why should I expect any different? I also prefer to be off-camera, so if I do sit to watch a run, I'm going to find somewhere to hide. The tough part about this is providing an entertaining stream not 100% coinciding with providing an entertaining meet-up.

I have always had way more fun outside of the main stream while attending these events, and I had the most fun so far at ESA -- and I had a cold all week.

You forgot Alex Kidd.

Alex Kidd in MIracle World: Finish most practice runs I do. I'll keep the room in the estimate to get some extra lives for safety and enough money for an emergency continue.

Castle of Illusion HD: race every week, no new PB, but mostly consistent. Likely to be an alternate and do commentary rather than a primary entrant.

Castlevania Rondo of Blood: I've improved quite a bit but I have some more work to do to get more consistent and faster at some of the boss kills.

Land of Illusion: I'm a beast.

Shadow Blasters: Did some practice this weekend. Got a couple runs a few seconds worse than PB, finished a train-wreck run under estimate. (No leaderboards for this game, submitted run is still best known time)

I made this one before I knew how those variables worked.

I'll fix it.

I mentioned this bit of info regarding equipment at some point but possibly in the wrong place.

You have listed 2 RGB cables for Genesis/MD1 / SMS with Stereo.

If you're getting/making cables which take audio from the headphone jack, those will not work for SMS. If you're getting/making cables which take audio from the DIN, it will be dual-mono and not stereo.

So while they do share the same DIN pinout there's an incompatibility if you want stereo.

Do multi-game runs count as 1 game or multiple games to be submitted?

I need the answer for... reasons.

fil: Disney
United Statesbtrim9 years ago

I've actually done this solo before (with any% Mickey for WoI)

I'm primarily willing to do (and submit) CoI SMS, Land, and Legend.

As a contingency I could do the Genesis games as well but it wouldn't be my first choice.

I'm looking for runners who might want to submit the classic Mickey mouse "Illusion" games for a relay at ESA.

Right now, I have 5 games in mind due to amount of runners. Quackshot could be included if there are enough runners. I'm looking for two teams.

The games/categories:

¤ Castle of Illusion (SMS) any% ¤ Castle of Illusion (Genesis) any% ¤ Land of Illusion (SMS) any% or 100% ¤ World of Illusion (Genesis ) any% Mickey, Donald, or Co-op ¤ Legend of Illusion (SMS) any%

Setup ideas include using 4 stations to stagger setup, or two of the same everdrives (-MD / Mega-).

Update 1: 2015-02-15

For now, I'll just list what people have offered.

Thanks everyone for the response. I really hope this happens.

Names in brackets haven't explicitly shown interest in this thread, but were mentioned or have mentioned it before.

Castle SMS: btrim, [Mephistus,] KrazyRasmus

Castle Gen: JohnUK89, MaxieTheHatter,Tenebrae, [Alowishus]

Land: btrim, [Mephistus,] KrazyRasmus, Edenal

World: ¤ Co-op: Edenal & [Grukk], [Pogington & FingersTehHand] ¤ Mickey: Edenal, MaxieTheHatter, Tenebrae, [Charleon] ¤ Donald: Edenal, MaxieTheHatter, Tenebrae

Legend: btrim, Edenal, KrazyRasmus

Quackshot: Tenebrae, MaxieTheHatter

Regarding commentary: Edenal's offer to learn for commentary is really important. I've also sent a feeler message to Blechy for remote commentary. If the logistics of that worked out, we'd have a really good team of mostly dedicated commentators.

I have removed myself as mod from the majority of games I don't have a runner's interest in.

I never wanted to be a mod for everything "Disney," I just wanted to have leaderboards for my Mickey Mouse games.

Things I ¤cannot¤ help you with unless you see my name in the mods list for a game:

  1. Add / change mod/supermod
  2. verify your run
  3. Add a category

Things I ¤can¤ help you with, but is best done through the game request form:

  1. Add a new game to the site, under this series

Just some observations after messing around with 1 game's theme. I'm not a graphic designer by any stretch of the imagination.

Backgrounds and foregrounds should be designed for tiling. A 1920x1080 (for example) background will take a while to load, not look how it should on many screens, not convey anything useful on mobile, etc.

Scrolling is really cool, and I wanted to use it. Then I checked the CPU usage and realized it was wasting CPU time simply to have a leaderboard up in your browser.

Translucency in the tables can look ok with a dark background, but I understand the point. The key if it is allowed is to not bring it down too far. Make sure it's opaque enough to read the text.

I learned lessons in all those areas from making this theme http://www.speedrun.com/castle_of_illusion_sms

Which is nothing special.

United Statesbtrim9 years ago

How does the "Streams" page work in terms of what game it looks for?

There are games whose names don't map well on Twitch/hitbox.

One example is Castle of Illusion. There are 3 versions of the game, and two game entries on twitch and hitbox (the same two entries). People will use whichever for whatever game.

Shouldn't there be a way to specify the Twitch game name(s) for each game?

It would also be nice to be able to specify the SRL game name. so you could quickly go to the race results for that game.

I add a comment to any runs I add on behalf of someone else saying I added it. If that was automated it'd be cool, but anyone interested in transparency could do the same today.

United Statesbtrim9 years ago

In themes, setting the cell transparency also changes the top menu.

This makes the games list hard to use
