I'm finding I'm a big sucker for these. Can anyone point me to any more? I'm getting towards the end of season 4 of The 100 and god it's so good. More examples of seasons like this - Star Trek Enterprise season 3 (the Xindi War), the only current season of Stranger Things, season 1 of 24 (which I still think is the greatest season of television ever created).
I generally find the shorter the better with stuff like this, but if it's a good American network TV series (which generally means 20+ episodes), then by all means, lay it on me too. I expect most of the series like this will either be from cable channels, online services, or overseas TV (typically shorter seasons).
My anime senses are tingling... Is someone else tired of average American TV?
The 100? Stranger Things? (I haven't seen Star Trek, : \ ), but try these:

Fargo (TV Series). It's on FX, but it's episodes all end up online like everything else these days.
Each of the current 3 seasons are 10 episodes long and tell an individual story. Sometimes the characters are connected, but each season has it's own central plot/storyline. The themes/settings are all inspired by the movie Fargo, so if you're not a fan of that kind of black/dark comedy with violence sprinkled in then it might not be for you. But it's still worth checking out as it's one of the best anthology type TV series of recent.
This isn't -exactly- what you're looking for, but you can check out Black Mirror on Netflix. Rather than a season telling an individual story, every single episode is a unique, individual story. The show does not have an overarching plot at all, and each episode uses new actors and characters, so it's like watching a new show each episode with the same theme of technology oppressing people.
I second Black Mirror, that show is very innovative and creative.

Stranger Things was exquisite, so hey, that's cool. I haven't really watched anime at all but I've watched a few movies based on them.
If they are Studio Ghibli, they don't count.
If they are by Satoshi Kon, I love you. ... oh wait, no, sorry about that, I don't know what came over me.
Black Mirror... hmm... how about:

And the best movie to ever be made ever in the history of ever:
I hate weeb talk but if you're going to watch Your Name, please don't watch the dub.

Well my perspective about the worst American TV shows is Caveman series in 2007 this show were critical disasters and, thankfully, each lasted only one seasons - as many of the worst reality shows, dramas, and sitcoms have. I would prefer to reform it and adhere something new it.
Stranger Things. All Time favorite show. It's second season comes out October 27, and it's on Netflix
If you're into that kinda stuff, you could try American Horror Story... Each season has a new story arc, with some of the actors playing different characters. It's a blend of psychological sex-violence-horror and kinda alternates between the eerie kind of horror (a little like Twin Peaks maybe) and good old Scream-style slashing. I didn't watch past the first season and IMO it's not quite the fresh take on horror it is made out to be by some, but again, if horror with scenes that feel a little off and opressive and lots of leather-masked coitus sounds good to you, this is your show!
