I'm using Livesplit as a timer for speedruns. You can change the run category in Livesplit itself but the times won't change. If I change the run category in Mario Kart from 200cc to 150cc the segment times are the exact same, why? Is there a way to avoid that?

Another question: Is there a way to show sub-categories (like in Mario Sports Mix)? Livesplit won't show them which is a problem for saving splits again.

As a disclaimer: I haven't used Livesplit in like a year, but unless there is a new feature I don't know about, you can't change your splits by just changing the category name in the splits/layout.

For Livesplit, category name is basically just a text field, it doesn't control your splits. Say you do a run of CategoryA, you make your splits and then save them by right clicking and doing "save splits" or just "save" (I forget what it says) as "CategoryA.lss" (I think .lss is what livesplit uses for a file extension, sorry if Im wrong). Now, all of your splits are for GameA and are saved in that file. If you want to do a run of CategoryB, you need to create new splits and save them as "CategoryB.lss". Now, if you want to switch between the two categories, you need to right click and do "open splits". Then you pick any of your saved split files (in this case CategoryA and CategoryB) and open the one you want. Then your splits/segments will be updated to reflect that category.

As for the sub categories, no, you can't natively do that in Livesplit, you have to create different split files for all of the different combinations of variables you want. Then you can proceed like I talked about up above. I tend to have folders for each game a run and put all of the different split files for the various categories of that game in the folder. As an example, I'll have an "ALTTP" folder, and inside of it I'll have splits for "mastersword", "nmg", "mirrorshield", etc. Then when I need splits for a category, I just do "open splits", go to the ALTTP folder and pick the category I want the splits/segments for and open them up. I use WSplit but the same holds for Livesplit as they work the same way in that regard.

Hope that helps.

It's a bit annoying if you change categories a lot but it works! Thanks! I guess I just expected too much...
